Tipoffs for 4/17 almost ready
WED 4/14 (3:15PM) -- Here's the first draft. I've left out the tipoff times on purpose, just in case of last-minute wrenches thrown from left field. All games are at Lynwood HS, 4050 E. Imperial Highway, Lynwood, CA. (3 courts, LHS2 = middle court). Hope it's evident what the pools are from the matchups. "TBD" in 6FT will be the 8th team filled by PacRim Sports league. Probable start times on the righthand side of table, just start at the top at each gym, then chronologically goes later in the day.
This will be finalized tonight. Any questions, best to text me. If you don't have my cell #, please email me.
COMMISH'S NOTES:
(4/13) Listed below updated... (4/12) We will be combining the Asian-6FT and Open-6FT, since everybody is 6FT and under anyways. Otherwise, neither division can move forward as there's not enough teams. We are confident that we will add at least 2 more teams that are 6FT, so that we will have at least 8 teams in that division.
In the INT/REC, we will add one more team for a 4-team, 3-game round-robin.
Here are the teams for the tournament:
ASIAN-ELITE The Yay (SF/SJ) - D.Famero [$200] Inside Moves - A.Espiritu [$200] Taiwan Center - S.Yu [$400] Woree Litech - J.Han [$400] Dream League Bay Area - R.Twu PacRim Sports - D.Raymundo Bout That Action (SJ) - D.Ngo [$200] Southbay LA - R.Dulay*
6FT (ANY ETHNICITY) Delano Allies - M.Barut Omega GT - Y.Lum Kimchi - M.Do Organized Noise - V.Hernaez Delano Killa Beez? - J.Mamauag Freestyle* Lifted* - R.Mai TBD* - D.Raymundo
INT/REC USCSD - J.Aranas Riverside PK - M.Valdes Pineapples - D.Lee PacRim INT/REC* - D.Raymundo
(3/23) FYI, the Stockton Ballers are holding an open tourney the week after:
- Stockton Ballers Universal Hoops Basketball Tournament. April 24th and 25th at Delta College in Stockton, CA. Entry is $350 and winner gets entry money back and t-shirt. Contact Bobby Hernandez at (209)817-1305 or e-mail at shootingclinic24(at)yahoo(dot)com.
(3/23) Just booked my flight/hotel/car. VirginAmerica SFO-LAX for Sat 4/17 early morning, then United LAX-SFO late night. $140 all told, $70 each way. I used Thrifty.com for the car, since I have frequent renter membership (their program is not bad, like 1 free day for every 8 days) which cost $20/day or $56 all told, using "AX10" promo code to get 10% off using American Express. Read on for hotel, I'm staying there too.
(3/23) Please scroll down and look at the FAQ section if you are confused by our divisions:
- Asian-Elite (competitive Asian teams above 6'0")
- Open-Comp (competitive teams with 1+ non-Asian, above 6'0")
- Asian-6FT (competitive Asian teams 6'0" and below)
- Open-6FT (competitive teams with 1+ non-Asian, 6'0" and below)
- Masters (for fun only, 32+ yrs old, 8-team consolation bracket)
- Intermediate/Rec (for fun only, 8-team consolation bracket)
I have a special discount only for Bay Area teams who have played in Dream League. And this, you may want to jump on because we will probably need to take 4/18 off for the league due to shortage of gyms (AAU tournament using all of our Oakland gyms: Be one of the first 4 teams to signup for the Masters or Int/Rec division ($280, which means $200 deposit paid) and I will pay for 1 room for your Saturday night stay at the Four Points Sheraton LAX ($80 value). Please see the FAQ below for more info on this.

Asian American basketball has been dominated by three great pillars of amateur hoop: the near-80-year existence of the Japanese/Chinese leagues in California, the IndoPak national tournament circuit, and each major cities' Filipino population. This explains why you will see some "C/J", "IPB", and "PHI" teams listed in our rankings.
Other codes CR = Current ranking R1 = Current ranking thru Rev1 PR = Previous Ranking ETH = Ethnicity of team
Notes Since our previous ranking, we have changed the formula so that only teams with champs in a major dreamleague-recognized tourney make this list. Here are other factors:
- Number of championships - How recent the championship - Strength of tourney field - Final4 geographic diversity - Number of semifinal+ finishes - Recent head-to-head results - Appearances in tourneys - Champs beyond past year
Pretty straightforward, almost list-based. The rankings are not that scientific and took me under an hour after I had the list of winners. Let me know if I missed any worthy tournaments!

Here are some previous championship teams that are noticeably absent of a championship in the past 12 months...

ASIAN-AMERICAN DIVISIONS: This means all participants must be of at least 25% of any of the nations represented by the Asian Games, which include the following ethnicities, among others: Arab-American, Indian/Pakistani, Pacific Islander, in additional to other Asian ethnicities.
6-FOOT DIVISIONS: This means all participants must be no taller than 6'0" without shoes. We will have a measuring stick at the gym.
DATES: Sat Apr 17 thru Sun Apr 18, 2010 (4pm Championship, best to budget a flight back no earlier than 8pm)
COST: $400 for competitive divisions (Asian-Elite, Asian-6FT, Open-Comp, Open-6FT). $280 for "fun" divisions: Masters and Intermediate/Recreational ("INT/REC"). A non-refundable deposit of $200 made no later than Fri Apr 9, 2010, guarantees your team's spot. Once you make the deposit, await a follow-up by email to discuss the remainder of the balance. You must pay the remaining balance before tipoff of your first game, otherwise you will forfeit that game.
DEADLINE FOR $200 NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT: Fri Apr 9, 2010
FORMAT: First off, NBA-style game format, but this will be possible for the Asian-Elite and Open-Comp divisions only. All other divisions follow PacRim's college game format. For the Masters and Int/Rec divisions, it will be an 8-team consolation bracket only, which only guarantees you two games minimum, 3 games maximum. For the more competitive divisions (everything other than Masters or Int/Rec), as always, dreamleague prefers to run a pool play on Saturday followed by no more than an Elite Eight single-elimination playoff on Sunday. Any more than an Elite Eight on Sunday creates problems getting the championship done by a reasonable hour for people to travel home (latest 4p tipoff).
LOCATION(S): Lynwood High School, 4050 E. Imperial Highway, Lynwood, CA. This venue has 3 gyms. We used it last year for some of our games.
HOTELS/AIRFARE/RENTAL CARS: We recommend checking kayak.com.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Btw, this is a work-in-progress FAQ. Send your questions to info(at)dreamleague(dot)org and we'll post them here. Keep checking back for new additions.
What is the discount for Bay Area "for fun" teams? First of all, we will likely take 4/18 off due to gym conflicts in Oakland (AAU tournament taking up all the city gyms we have). If you are Dream League league team from the Bay Area and you are one of the first 4 teams to signup for either the Masters or Int/Rec ($280 entry fee, $200 team deposit), I will pay for 1 room Saturday night only at the Four Points Sheraton LAX. It will be a double-queen room, which should help on your team expenses (about an $80 value). However, this still means you need to find a room for Friday night if need be -- you can also choose to drive up really early Saturday morning, like 6am, arrive by 3pm or so and play at 5pm and 7pm on Saturday, thus removing the need to find a place for Friday night. This is, of course, pending available gym time for Saturday night at Lynwood. Incidentally, the gym at Lynwood HS is approximately 30 minutes by freeway from the hotel. The rate for Friday night there will be slightly less than $100 for the same room. Finally, this is also subject to room availability. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to maintain these rates.
Is the Bay Area discount available to other traveling teams that do not necessarily play in the Bay Area's Dream League? Only if we really need teams. There's only 8 teams per division, so it is not advised that you wait until the last minute to signup.
What if you get more than 8 teams to signup for the "for fun" divisions? Then we will start another group of 8 and if that group does not reach 8, we will either refund the deposits or discuss with them viable alternatives.
What are the prizes? Due to unexpected high gym costs, we are cutting the cash prize to $200 but we will still have championship t-shirts. The INT/REC division will only have championship t-shirts. In years past it was a team championship trophy plus t-shirts, but the entry fee was also $40 cheaper in years past. For the "for fun" divisions (Masters and Int/Rec), if your team pays full price, you will receive generic Dream League t-shirts because we are keeping costs way down. If your team gets a discount from us (such as the league teams traveling from the Bay Area) and you win the championship in a "for fun" division, we will not have the budget to give you a championship award. In the Competitive divisions (Asian-Elite, Open-Comp, Asian-6FT, Open-6FT) you will receive your entry fee back if you win the Championship. We are also planning to have championship t-shirts for the winners and generic Dream League t-shirts for the Runners-Up.
Can we request certain times? Email us and we will try, but in general, SoCal teams should expect to play anytime during the day or night on Saturday, while traveling teams (such as from the Bay Area) will be given first priority on later times, if they request it. On Sunday, all teams must be available at all times. The only exception to all of this is the "for fun" divisions (Masters and Int/Rec), since those divisions have so few games in the strict Consolation format -- we can possibly be more flexible with those two lower divisions.
What is the Consolation format? We will only use Consolation format for the "for fun" divisions: Masters and Int/Rec. Just like any high school or college 8-team tournament, there's eight teams exactly, you win your first game, you move to the right of the bracket, you lose your first game, you move to the left of the bracket, you lose your first two games, you're done. Aside from the Championship game, there's also the 3rd Place and Consolation games.
What if you don't get enough teams, or exactly 8 teams, for a division with Consolation format? Then we will probably refund your money or come up with a creative solution that is agreeable by everyone involved.
What is Pool Play format? In the competitive divisions, i.e., the Asian-Elite, Open-Comp, Asian-6FT, and Open-6FT, we divide the field in each division into separate "pools" of 3 or more teams, depending on how many teams signup, and you play 2 games on Saturday. You are then seeded and placed in an 8-team single-elimination bracket for Sunday. Therefore, you will play anywhere between 3 to 5 games, typically. Caveat: if we have more than 8 teams in any given division, we may end up having a play-in game on Saturday night amongst the lowest-ranked teams, which would eliminate the field until we have 8 teams for Sunday. That would still guarantee that each team, even if they are eliminated late Saturday night by the play-in, is guaranteed at least 3 games in Pool Play. Compare this to only 2 games guaranteed in the Consolation format.
Are non-Asians allowed? Yes, but you must play in the Open-Comp or Open-6FT divisions. Read on for more info.
What if we only have one guy who is over 6'0" without shoes? Then you must sign up for either the Asian-Elite or Open-Comp. Sorry, we have to draw the line somewhere.
What if we only have one guy who is non-Asian? 25% Asian ethnicity minimum is required for Asian-Elite and Asian-6FT. If even one player on your team is non-Asian, to avoid any risk of a team protesting on you, you are better served signing up for the Open-Comp or Open-6FT.
Why do you call the top divisions "Asian Elite" and "Open Comp"? Sometimes, Asian tourneys will call their top division "Open", as in "open" to any height, as opposed to 6FT and under, however, you can see how that would introduce confusion in our situation, since we are allowing non-Asians in our "Open" divisions. We also called the "over-6FT" Open division "Open-Comp" to suggest that it is a competitive division, but not necessarily the best out there, with respect to some of the pro-am teams out there that can carry average heights of 6'5" on the team. Our intention is that our Open-Comp division is similar to our Asian division, except that there are one, two, or three non-Asians, although an Open team can have as many non-Asians as it desires. We expect that some of our Asian teams will pickup non-Asian players to have a better roster than without the non-Asian players. Such teams will be required to play in the Open-Comp or Open-6FT division, depending on height.
What's the forfeit thing? Real simple: if by tipoff of your first game at the tourney, you do not pay the remaining balance of your entry fee, your team will be forfeited on the spot.
My team is traveling from all the way across the country and we're paying up the butt on airfare. Can you cut us a deal on the team entry fees? It all depends on what team you have, how many teams are already signed up, and what the final gym costs will be. But if you are coming from a great distance and thereby enhancing our tournament a bit, we're happy to try and figure something out.
