NL Playoff Brackets (final)
Game Time three-peats
AUGUST 12, 2007 -- Game Time earned the first-ever dreamleague three-peat with a 73-67 defeat of Setai Cossa. Setai came out sharp as you would expect for this veteran team, going into halftime with a 31-30 lead. But Yih-Wei Chien was too strong in the middle, as he helped Game Time score 5 straight points out of the halftime gate, and Setai just couldn't get into a groove in the 3rd quarter as Game Time took an insurmountable 7-point lead... More info
Can Game Time three-peat?
AUGUST 9, 2007 -- See Bird's Eye page. So we'll find out at 4:30pm this Sun 8/12 at PHRC if Game Time can pull off the unprecedented NL three-peat. Due to double-elim status, if Setai Cossa should upset on 8/12, then we come back on 8/19 for the one-and-done. Game Time should be back at full strength with a married Michael Kraus back in the Bay. Keith Wang has been playing unbelievable of late. And yet, both Game Time playoff wins have come in overtime. Would be cool to have yet another one decided in OT. If Setai were to indeed come back and pull off the dual upsets on 8/12 and 8/19, that would definitely be an incredible accomplishment (although maybe not unprecedented, I'm not sure). Recap of the Driven vs Game Time matchup is posted below.
Game Time surges to comeback against Driven
AUGUST 9, 2007 -- Driven took a 54-40 lead into the 4th, but Game Time went on a 9-for-12 shooting spree to send the game into overtime, where Ryan Susanto was the hero in keeping Game Time close, then over the hump as Driven couldn't answer back... More info
Driven tries to do what Setai once did (sort of)
AUGUST 2, 2007 -- Driven and Game Time will go at it this Sun 8/5 at 12:30pm at IJRC. Can Sunny Margate will his troops to victory, in this perhaps the last hurrah for a recently struggling Driven franchise? With Sean Caiola returning to the Heads for league as well as tourney play and the mashing of Margate, Ryan Cruz, KJ Rosales and Jon Lee with Shootout for tourney play, who knows if we will see Driven in this form in next season's dreamleague?... Driven surprises Setai, Game Time survives
JULY 24, 2007 -- The NL will take 7/29 off due to the Delano and Tahoe tourneys. We will resume with Driven at Game Time on 8/5. If Driven wins, then Game Time will face Setai on 8/12 with the winner to play Driven, which only has single-elimination status, for all the marbles the same day. If Game Time wins, then Game Time will face Setai on 8/12 and if Game Time wins that one, they win their 3rd straight NL championship. If Setai wins on 8/12, then they must come back and beat Game Time on 8/19 for all the marbles. Here are recaps from 7/22... More info
Tipoffs for 7/22 posted
JULY 19, 2007 -- Tipoffs for 7/22 have been posted. See the Bird's Eye page. Btw, we're still working hard on the stats, even though it seems like we're not. We're pretty far behind, but remain committed to getting them all done by championships, when there are fewer games to input.
Matchups for 7/22 posted
JULY 17, 2007 (6:00PM) -- Check the Bird's Eye page. NL captains have been issued the following statement:
"Sugar Beats has withdrawn from the NL due to team implosion involving guys who have flaked or decided to focus on other leagues, such as the Hayward Filipino leagues. My plan is to replace Sugar Beats with a hodge-podge of two players left over from Sugar Beats (Mark Scates and Mike Huang), players on my AL-Elite Rayguns team who aren't already playing in the NL, and anybody else I can pickup. We will enter the Final Four bracket as if we were #4 Sugar Beats, with single-elimination status and, as you can see on the website, against #1 Game Time in the brackets (#3 Driven vs #2 Setai on the other side). Only Game Time and Setai Cossa have double-elim status. SO LET ME KNOW BEFORE TOMORROW AT 12PM NOON, IF ANY NL TEAM OBJECTS TO MY EFFORTS TO REPLACE SUGAR BEATS, OTHERWISE I WILL MOVE FORWARD WITH IT." FYI, the Payment Registry will be updated tomorrow, so if there are still any outstanding payments, out of common courtesy, please get them done and overwith.
Recaps from 7/8
JULY 17, 2007 -- Recaps from 7/8 have been posted. Next up: scores from 7/15 later Tuesday, a stats update on where we are on Wednesday, and recaps from 7/15 on Thursday, at least that's the plan... More info
T-shirts being distributed
JULY 17, 2007 -- Over the past 3 weeks, we have been distributing the new t-shirts. Props go to Ky Truong of TheOcho in AAA-P for the design and Starfish, owned by the uncle of AAA-P Frosh Tryouts' Calvin Ma, for giving us the usual friendly prices. Thanks to those of you who submitted your designs. We had to pick something quick and didn't really have time to consider all the other ideas that came in. We're still looking for an Oaktown design for the future, btw... More info
If your team has not received their t-shirts yet, please let us know, just in case. We still have more t-shirts to distribute per gym logistics and where you happen to be this Sunday, but we don't want to keep missing you.
Anyone who wants a t-shirt and was not scheduled to get one due to late or non-Internet payments will have to wait until all of the t-shirts are distributed first, so we can see what we got left over. You will have to reimburse us $5 for the cost of the t-shirt. We don't plan to print more t-shirts of our previous designs until next season, which will start the 3rd week of September, after our Vegas tourneys.
Tipoffs for 7/15 posted
JULY 12, 2007 -- Check the Bird's Eye page for tipoffs. Three very good games, with MoneyTree perhaps the best shot for an AL-E team beating their NL opponent, Setai Cossa. This is because the Runnin' Rebels have been struggling and face still a talented team in Driven, as well as the Rayguns facing two-time defending NL champion, Game Time.
NL splits against AL-E comp
JULY 10, 2007 -- Matchups for 7/15 have been posted on the Bird's Eye page. The AL-Elite CPA HEADS outlasted NL's Driven, but NL's Setai Cossa managed to hold onto a narrow win over AL-Elite's Five Ten. Sugar Beats didn't show up to the game against the Rayguns and the Runnin' Rebels forfeited to Game Time. We'll go at it again this weekend between the NL and AL-Elite, with the exception of the CPA HEADS and Five Ten, which will be a repeat of a previous AL-E matchup. Check the season schedule article for previously posted details.
Btw, Sugar Beats, Driven, and the Runnin' Rebels are now officially behind on their roster slot payments.
Tipoffs for 7/8 posted
JULY 5, 2007 -- Hope everyone had a great July 4th. I'm still gonna try to do recaps from 7/1, but because I've meant to do this the past two weeks and haven't come through, I can't make any promises. Besides, we're getting a little even further behind on stats, so I might just spend all of Friday on stats and hope that nothing comes up the rest of today for recaps. In the meantime, let's take a look at this week's interesting matchups... More info
NL vs AL-E on 7/8
JULY 3, 2007 -- This Sunday is the first of 2 straight weeks where NL teams will face off against AL-Elite teams. The games will count in the standings and will have a bearing on whether or not you get double-elim status for the playoffs, which is granted to all teams that finish above .500.
Tipoffs will be posted by Thu morning, as usual. Matchups and locations are currently on the Bird's Eye page. The Sugar Beats and Driven each need to pay for 1 slot before tipoff.
Also, congratulations to the Game Time's Keith Wang, whose NorCal Hoopaholics won the Cornerstone tournament last weekend.
Bye for NL (and AL-E) on 7/1
JUNE 26, 2007 -- A leaguewide bye has been issued this upcoming Sun 7/1 due to the Cornerstone tourney, which takes up a good chunk of time between 1:30pm-6:00pm, thereby not really giving me a lot of options on scheduling, since most of you are playing in the tournament... More info
Tipoffs for 6/24 posted
JUNE 21, 2007 -- First off, a reminder to Sugar Beats, which needs to pay for 1 more spot (5 spots paid, 6th game coming up) and Driven, which doesn't need to pay until 7/8 (6 slots paid, 7th game on 7/8). Also, next week 7/1 is the Cornerstone tournament, so let's see what happens when they send out the schedule early next week before I decide whether or not NL and AL-Elite (since there are cross-games going on then) will take a leaguewide bye. Captains, send me an email if you feel strongly one way or another.
The NL is shaping up rather competitively. Three teams are stuck at 2-3, which very well could have been two teams at 3-2 and two at 2-3 if Sugar Beats had made just 1 or 2 free throws out of the 16 they missed. Mark Scates has doesn't want me to rub it in, but I think SIXTEEN missed free throws at the NL level is something I will keep bringing up into the next decade. Anyhoo, maybe going down in a flame of missed free throws is still better than being outscored 101-59 in fourth quarters this season as Driven has been suffering. They've got to turn things around against the division leaders, Game Time. And my guess is, Michael Kraus will be in town this weekend. He's out again on 7/1 against AL-Elite, but again we MIGHT take that week off. Finally, the 2-3 Setai Cossa has added important roster guns in Mike Reding and Taraz Lee. One thing's for sure: at least one 2-3 team will inch that much closer to being relegated with single-elim playoff status.
A great day for old men who shoot treys
JUNE 20, 2007 -- Matchups for 6/24 have been posted (see Bird's Eye link above), but I'm working on tipoffs all day today. Here are some recaps from 6/20. Btw, remember I promised to do recaps from 6/3 and 6/10? Well, that ain't happenin' anymore, esp. after how long it took me to do 6/20 recaps... More info
Sugar Beats needs to pay for 2 spots
JUNE 15, 2007 -- Sugar Beats' 5th game is coming and only 3 roster slots have been paid for. See Payment Registry link above.
Tipoffs for 6/17 posted
JUNE 14, 2007 (9:00AM) -- Click on the Bird's Eye View link above. Next up: update of Payment Registry page (it's currently only updated thru 6/9) and any necessary auto-forfeit warning notices, the long-overdue quickie recaps from 6/3 and quickies from 6/10 as well.
Thus far, a pretty tight race in the NL if you look at the STANDINGS page. Setai is really the only team with a must-win this Sun 6/17, as they don't want to fall too far below .500 and the coveted double-elim status for the playoffs. The NL-AL Elite matchups are supposed to start on 7/1, only 2 weeks away, but I might postpone it and push back the season schedule (again) due to the several teams affected by the Cornerstone tournament.
Stacks-o-stats, Payments, T-shirts
JUNE 13, 2007 -- STATS UPDATE: This past weekend's stack of scoresheets is mighty THICK. Reminder: you guys have to have perfectly filled out lineups -- including guys who show up late who must report their number and full name to the table DURING A DEAD BALL SITUATION -- and all players must have already submitted an online waiver, otherwise your team's stats will be skipped and who knows when we'll get to it because of our cakes on a never-ending conveyor belt. I keep seeing such holes in scoresheets maybe once out of every 8. So if your stats aren't up, that could be a very good reason why.
Btw, I just finished hand-compiling the 6/3 stats and the remaining ones from 5/20. Those will get turned from paper into website by our statcrew pretty soon. Also, stats prior to that should be 100% complete (except for teams fitting the above description) by this Friday, according to our last remaining straggling statcrew teenager.
PAYMENT UPDATE: Unfortunately for you, the NL is sort of lagging behind the other 8 divisions in terms of season schedule, which means each week that passes, the player fees continue to go up. Since a lot of what I do has to be uniform across all leagues, I would simply advise you to pay before the fees go up too high. Players have already had plenty of time to make payments, so you won't find a lot of sympathy from my point of view.
T-SHIRT UPDATE: We currently have a handful of dreamleaguers submitting some ideas for t-shirts. We'll figure that out no later than next week. One thing I might have to do: it appears that costs have gone up and the only way to keep my estimates on par is to order all one design (the t-shirt business is weird). So we'll just go with the new design. Because we want this design to be right, maybe we'll put the handful of suggestions up for vote by the end of the week. That means t-shirts won't be ready until probably the 7/1, 7/8, 7/15, and 7/22 games (they can't all be distributed in one week...it's a drip process). What refs rule on-the-spot holds
JUNE 12, 2007 -- Here's a chance for all divisions to learn from what transpired in the AAA-P recently. It's a reinforcement of whatever refs rule on-the-spot is pretty much what we have to go with... More info
T-shirts: we need new hoop fashion sense
JUNE 7, 2007 -- Click on the Bird's Eye link above, as tipoffs for 6/10 have been posted.
While I've got your attention, let me know if anybody wants to design our new t-shirt coming up. Which means, for those who have been asking, t-shirts won't be available for another 2 weeks (but remember, it's a long season). I'll try to get some of the old designs ordered right away, but of course I need to tally those up first -- which means no more stats entries for several days. Anyways, I digress...
For the first time in years, I took a stroll thru Niketown last week and noticed how not-in-fashion we might be w.r.t. our t-shirts. Things tend to get that way when you turn 36 and have a little 2-year-old to look after. This whole "retro 70's" thing and those colorful (read: ugly) Air Force Ones -- I don't get it. How I long for the days when hoops defined fashion, not the other way around. Ah, the Revolution, the original Haurache, Air Maestros, the Pippens that fit like a sock but weren't called Pippens, when people were too respectful of MJ and didn't wear Jordans unless they were clearly the best player on the court, blah blah blah...I oughtta write a blogpost about this on dreamblogue.
So if there's anybody out there who wants 10 free t-shirts for their whole team (as payment for your assistance and on top of any t-shirts you already get for on-time payments...or if you work yourself to the bone on this new t-shirt design, OK, maybe 20 t-shirts?!!), let me know. The catch: it's gotta have some rendition of our logo and, of course, the words "Dream League". Also, sure would be nice to appease the Oaktown folks this time around, since last time we already made "San Francisco" ones.
Matchups for 6/10 posted, tipoffs soon
JUNE 6, 2007 -- Click on the Bird's Eye link above for the latest and greatest. Don't forget to check the Payment Registry, although it hasn't been updated since 6/2, but at least you know what you owe if you didn't pay anything this past weekend. Meanwhile, we've updated the season schedule... More info
Next on the to-do list for this week: More stats inputting.
The long, arduous path of your stats
JUNE 5, 2007 -- (I've never been pestered by anyone in the NL, but...) Here are some frequently asked questions about stats. If you've seen this in a reply email to you, don't take it personal. We're just trying to educate everyone on how stats work... More info
And if you're on the list NL players without online waivers submitted, chances are your stats are not going up anytime soon, although we will try to get them done before the season is over.
Fair warning to Driven, Sugar on auto-forfeits
MAY 30, 2007 (12:00PM) -- There are no games this Sun 6/3, but on 6/10 Driven needs to pay for at least 2 slots and Sugar Beats 1 slot, otherwise we will forfeit those teams at tipoff. Unfortunately, the track record of the other 8 divisions does not allow me to offer any leeway on this. So if you snooze, you lose, simple as that.
Leaguewide bye issued for NL for 6/3
MAY 26, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Because every game originally scheduled on 6/3 is affected by either the Drakes or Showtime tourney, we are going to call 6/3 a leaguewide bye and move the entire season back one week... (MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW)
The Golden State of Mind guys
MAY 26, 2007 (8:00AM) -- From Vinsanity. This is a maybe-weekly chat with one or more of the guys from Golden State of Mind, who have a team in dreamleague Bay Area. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend and enjoy the chat... More info
Quickies from 5/20
MAY 24, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Here are some quick recaps from 5/20... 6-on-5 affair for Setai vs Sugar...Sugar had Aaron Javier's sister (?) Alanna Javier playing...Setai won 79-71 as Michi Langfeldt scored 37 points...Jeremy Delacruz shot just 4-for-17 in defeat...Setai picked up three OE players who played an hour earlier...John Nasol led Sugar Beats with 32 points, but they were without David Torres, their leading scorer, and captain Mark Scates... Driven once again had a 4th quarter collapse, this time against Game Time... They could not stop Game Time's Dave Peng, who had 10 rebounds and scored 22 points on 11-for-22 from the field...Johnny Liu and Yih-Wei Chien both had 20 points...Sunny Margate led Driven with 22 points and Ryan Cruz added 21, while KJ Rosales had 8 assists in defeat.
Tipoffs for 5/20 posted
MAY 17, 2007 (3:00PM) -- The tipoffs for 5/20 were posted this morning. Check the Bird's Eye link above. Setai, who will likely be without bench spark Junius Ho due to unavoidable scheduling conflicts, visits Sugar Beats, who will be without the out of town captain Mark Scates, who recorded at least 8 blocked shots last week in a 5-on-5 versus Game Time. Setai will end up with 2 games in Oakland, 6 in SF. Sugar will end up with 5 in home Oakland, 2 in SF, and 1 in RWC.
In the other NL matchup, it's Driven at Game Time in SF. The later afternoon game was so that Driven's Sunny Margate could make it from his SJ league and Game Time's myriad of players on AL teams could make it as well. Driven will end up with 5 games at home SF and 3 in Oakland, while Game Time will end up with 4 in SF, 1 in RWC, and 3 in Oakland.
Win Gatorade, donate 15 minutes this Saturday
MAY 16, 2007 (3:00PM) -- Join us this Saturday, May 19 from 10am onwards at the Asian Heritage Street Celebration. We will have our own booth (donated by AsianWeek) where you can shoot mini-hoops and win what will probably be coveted bottles of Gatorade, if the weather is hot.
If you want to drop by and help give Commish a little break from manning the booth, that would be greatly appreciated, too. Btw, we're there to promote our Beijing 2008 Olympics tour/tourney... More info
Suspensions levied for taunting
MAY 16, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Players and fans on AAA-Elite teams Hyphy and Second To None were levied suspensions by the league office for altercations stemming from taunting. Luckily, an outright fight was avoided. Meanwhile, the REC-Oak Spartans team is currently under investigation for taunting... More info
Now's also a good time to remind you that we have a Rasheed Wallace rule, too. The moment any player accrues 4 technical fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct, that player will automatically receive a one-game suspension.
Cut out the player-to-player chatter
MAY 15, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Scores from 5/13 are going up as we speak. We still plan to update the Season Schedules and do a midseason preview now that a few games are under our belt. Stats are going up slowly and 5/13 was finally a week where we had our regular staff and, thus, good scoresheets which will make 5/13 stats go up more smoothly.
While we wait for this content, please be remind that in dreamleague, you are strictly forbidden from instigating any sort of inflammatory chatter with an opposing player. Normally, we call this the "taunting" rule, but our experience tells us that many of you do not really know what "taunting" means. You may think that saying, "Shoot the ball" is trivial to your opponent, but your opponent might not because if he makes the shot, he's going to say something back at you. And yes, we think it's your fault for instigating it in the first place. As written in our RULES & REGULATIONS, taunting is an automatic ejection.
If you are caught as a recipient of instigation and the ref is not aware of the chatter going on, the protocol is to tell the ref about it and if you don't think he's handling it, burn a timeout and have your captain call me on cellphone immediately. Btw, this has obviously almost never been a problem in NL and AL-Elite, but I thought I would post it anyways, just in case.
Separate NL and AL-Elite league pages
MAY 10, 2007 (3:00PM) -- Dreamleague Deputy Commissioner Yih-Wei Chien made a profound discovery today while setting up some teams in the league page formerly known as NL+AL-E. He couldn't add Keith Wang's player card to both NL Game Time and AL-Elite MoneyTree.
So we have to split the league in order for the stats to work. Otherwise we have duplicate player cards and when the new website goes up sometime later this century, with duplicate player cards we can't track full career stats.
On the league schedule and standings side, in the NL you will notice that we will eventually have a dummy "AL-Elite" Conference which will allow us to schedule games between teams in the NL and AL-Elite as far as the database goes. In the AL-Elite, similar thing. When you click on the stats for the games between NL and AL-Elite teams, we will purposely leave the NL team's stats blank in the AL-Elite pages and vice-versa for the NL pages. That means all the stats go to right guy in the right division.
From now on, you will see the NL and AL-E league pages have its own flavor until the NL and AL-E teams finally comingle late in the season.
Tipoffs for 5/13 Posted
MAY 10, 2007 (8:00AM) -- See Bird's Eye link above. Here are some scheduling quirks for 5/13...
- NL Setai is at 7pm. Perhaps unbeknownst to Setai, Junius Ho requested a 6pm+ game due to his personal schedule, which knocked out everything in between 3-6pm. We couldn't give the 6pm because we already had one team at 6pm 1 hour outside its usual timeframe, so Setai is also 1 hour past its usual timeframe.
- AL-E OE travels to SMHS to meet the Rayguns. The Season Schedule page will be updated with such details, but like most other teams in the AL-E, OE will end up with 4 of 7 regular season games at home (SF), 1 on the Peninsula, and 2 across the Bay (Oakland). Again, more on this by next week.
- Likewise, AL-E MTP travels to Oakland to meet the CPA HEADS.
Meanwhile, you should see stats dating back to 4/15 start to trickle in in the next few days, as they are mostly in the hands of our teenage online statcrew after a grueling few weeks of setting up the teams with the right player names in the database.
We ask that you continue to provide team names and full names of players, including those who show up late, each week at your game. Make sure everyone on your team has submitted an ONLINE WAIVER at some point, especially if they are new to dreamleague. Any small omission can cause the greatest of delays in getting stats inputted.
Matchups for 5/13 Posted, Tipoffs Soon
MAY 9, 2007 (1:30PM) -- The matchups for 5/13 have been posted. Click on the Bird's Eye View link above. Specific tipoff times will be posted by tomorrow, but you can get a sense of where and what time your team will be playing by looking at the preferences of your team and your opponent's on the Bird's Eye page.
NL+AL-Elite Season Matchups Determined
MAY 8, 2007 (8:00AM) -- This season's NL and AL-Elite divisions will feature, for the first time, inter-mingling of NL and AL-Elite teams. There are 4 teams in the NL and 5 teams in the AL-Elite.
In the NL, the 4 teams will face each other twice for the first 6 of 8 regular season games. In the AL-Elite, the 6 teams will face each other once for the first 5 of 7 regular season games... More info
Stats: You do your part, we'll do ours
MAY 4, 2007 (8:00AM) -- The first few weeks might be the most crucial parts of the stats process. You see, we have to punch in your rosters correctly first. Then we can go robotic and feed scoresheets (assuming they are taken down correctly by the handful of people who will end up touching them) to our kids from the YMCA, etc., to punch in.
So you just simply, absolutely, unequivocally gotta do your part right. Otherwise we might have to hold off on your stats because we can't figure out who you are... More info
Season schedule almost done
MAY 3, 2007 (2:00PM) -- Almost done with the NL and AL-Elite (and meshed) schedules. I'll go into detail later when I post the full article, but the 4 NL teams will play each other twice for 6 games. The 6 AL-Elite teams will play each other once for 5 games. My plan is to have each NL team play 2 different, non-player-common-denominator teams. This results in 8 games total for NL teams and 7 total games for AL-Elite teams. For NL, double-elim playoff status will be attained only if you are .500 or better against NL teams. For AL-Elite, anytime I have had a 7-game regular season, I have given all teams double-elimination status, since the norm is to get 8 regular season games and you're only gonna have 7 this time.
Looking ahead to 5/6 and 5/13 (and 6/17)
APRIL 30, 2007 (5:00PM) -- Only planning to have teams with players not playing in the Japanese Sacramento tourney, like Sugar Beats and Driven, play this Sun 5/6. In the AL-Elite, I might go with Five Ten later in the day and/or the Runnin' Rebels and/or CPA HEADS.
This is because we've already had NL Game Time vs Setai Cossa and AL-Elite Rayguns vs MoneyTree games. So the season has started already and I'd like to keep it not too far behind the other 8 divisions, especially as we get out to July and August. It should be cool that we'll be ending this season's bevy of dreamleague divisions with NL and AL-Elite last, most likely.
I haven't figured out how to mesh the two divisions as mentioned below, but most likely I'll keep it with 4 NL and 6 AL-Elite, so as to avoid extraneous byes, which would prolong the season, if we had an odd number of teams in either division. Plan to be in full swing on 5/13, which brings us to...
MOTHER'S DAY 5/13: The feedback I'm getting from all 9 divisions is that most of you don't want to prolong the season too far -- if you look at the Season Schedule page in the List of Articles on the right (for all divisions except NL+AL-Elite), you'll see that we're into late July or, in some cases, early August.
To avoid stretching too far, we're planning to play on Mother's Day 5/13 (and Father's Day 6/17). SO NOW IS THE TIME TO SUBMIT PREFERENCES FOR THOSE DAYS, OR REQUEST/PRAY FOR A BYE ON 5/13 AND/OR 6/17.
Welcome to NL and AL-Elite
APRIL 26, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Because we only have 4 NL teams, what we will do is have some of the teams that don't overlap players in both leagues play against those teams with no overlaps in AL-Elite. This will only be for some regular season games -- NL and AL-Elite will obviously have separate playoffs... More info
