Bay Area Select in the Driver's Seat Bird's eye view of schedule Playoff Brackets
OCTOBER 6, 2006 -- Bay Area Select is now in the driver's seat, a testament to taking care of business when they needed to.
Sure, they haven't faced the vaunted Blazers and their almost AL-Premier-caliber big frontcourt, but Bay Area Select took care of the unpredictable upset-minded R.W.D. after soundly defeating a short-handed Bobcat team. Then last week, BAS took care of a shorthanded Halfway Reloaded, which did not have the services of all-star forward Sonny Burns.
This weekend, after the Blazers and Halfway chop each other down to pieces, Bay Area Select will need to use its advantage to take care of business once again, because if a repeat championship is forced by either the Blazers or Halfway, all of a sudden BAS will be shorthanded due to players playing in another league next weekend (yeah, I don't know why that would be more important than the Dream League championship, either).
If Burns isn't back for the Prodigies, look for the Blazers to pound the Prodigies down low with center-forwards Vic Lo and Jason Ting. Prodigies' point guard Barry Lee is going to have to shift to overdrive to avoid the halfcourt set imposed by the Blazers. Even with Burns, rebounds are not going to come easy.
Then it's going to be tough for either the Blazers or Prodigies to have enough gas left in the tank to face BAS, which has been battle tested with recent tournament appearances and other Filipino leagues.
By the way, ShotCallers and Bobcats slugged it out to sudden death overtime (triple OT). The ShotCallers won on a stop-and-pop by point guard Lance Michihira, then couldn't muster up enough energy to keep up with the Blazers. More on this and other highlights of this past season in a forthcoming season recap.
Playoff Matchups for 10/1
SEPTEMBER 28, 2006 (2:00PM) -- The schedule is finalized because it is now on the SCHEDULE/SCORES page. Please see the bird's eye view schedule (link above) for the detailed explanation.
SEPTEMBER 28, 2006 (8:00AM) -- We're still finalizing the schedule and it should be up by today (Thu) afternoon. For now, check the bird's eye view (link is above) and the updated playoff brackets.
Playoff Matchups for 9/24
SEPTEMBER 19, 2006 -- The playoff brackets have been updated including RWD's shocking #8 vs #1 upset of the Blazers.
According to the raw scoresheet, the Blazers had their Big Three of pg Galen Ma and inside beasts Jason Ting and Victor Lo, but RWD's pg Mike Hoang seems to have gone off to keep the game fast-paced on the Blazers on their heels. Hoang is a former AAA MVP from a few years back. RWD still only has single-elim, but you only need to go on a streak of 4 straight to win the championship here, even with single-elim.
Since there are no special geographic circumstances because the East only has two teams represented, we proceed with the brackets unlike in other divisions where the 2nd round now features a most interesting matchup of #5 Bay Area Select vs #8 RWD and #3 Halfway at #2 ShotCallers.
In the Losers Bracket, we re-seed as we've always done. #7 Alum draws the high-seed #1 Blazers. Meanwhile, the Bobcats paid the price for not having a full roster as was the case with the Piston Hondas. Both will now face each other in the elimination Losers Bracket, a repeat of a 1-point barnburner from weeks ago in which both teams still did not have full rosters on either side. Whomever brings the fuller roster probably wins.
Playoff Matchups for 9/17
SEPTEMBER 13, 2006 -- We have 8 teams for the playoffs, but only two of them are from the East. That means it's not exactly a cut-and-dry 8-team bracket. To avoid yet another Alum vs Shot matchup, we'll swap the #2 vs #7 and #3 vs #6 games, as follows:
#8 RWD at #1 Blzr #5 BAS at #4 Bobc #6 Pstn at #2 Shot #7 Alum at #3 Half
For the remaining 3 teams that struggled in the AAA-Elite: Mix (2-6), NRI (1-7), and AlBa (1-7), we will combine you with the 4 teams that struggled in the AAA-Premier and call that the AAA-Lower single-elimination playoffs. Let this be the advent of a new division in case we get the same number of AAA teams next season:
"E" = Elite, "P" = Premier P#3 FAO at E#2 NRI P#4 Frsh at E#1 Mix E#3 AlBa at P#2 OSF P#1 Grnd gets a first round bye
Even though we have Grnd setup for a first-round bye, we might combine the first two rounds into one this weekend 9/17, so we leave open the possibility that Grnd might still play on 9/17, with the 3 winners of the games above playing doubleheaders. This will depend on gym availability.
We'll probably put up a new league site (which means stats will start at zero) soon, just for this single-elim playoff bracket.
Notes for 8/27
AUGUST 25, 2006 -- Scheduling notes for 8/27...
BOBC at BLZR -- Bobc needed before 2pm. HALF at SHOT -- Both teams afternoon or later. Half guys coming from GPRC. PSTN at MIX -- Early afternoon avoids Pstn conflict in evening. RWD at ALBA -- No scheduling issues.
T-SHIRT UPDATE: Superstar kid scorekeeper EJ and Commish spent 4 hours last night sorting out the t-shirts. All t-shirts owed should be passed out by this Sunday at your respective gyms. Please see a scorekeeper. Also, the quantities for the New t-shirts were messed up, so we gave the Circle or Gothic version to those of you whom we think have not been in the league as long as others.
Payment Auto-Forfeits as of 8/23
Excerpted from an email sent today to all captains with outstanding payments: YOU WILL ALSO FORFEIT THE ENTIRE PLAYOFFS. THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO PAY. ABSOLUTELY YOUR LAST CHANCE, PERIOD -- NO MORE WAITING ON UNPAID PAYMENTS AFTER 8/27 ANYMORE AND I WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO BE THE BAD GUY AND CUT YOU AND YOUR TEAM OFF.
AUGUST 23, 2006 -- We will be calling refs on the spot to ensure payments have been made to ANY SCOREKEEPER prior to tipoff (not after). The following teams are at risk of forfeiting their next game:
HALFWAY RELOADED: 7 spots paid by Torrent, Karl, London (2), Randy, Sonny, and Alfred. 8th game on 8/27.
R.W.D.: 7 spots paid for, all by Mike. 8th game on 8/27.
BLAZERS: 7 spots and individual $5 Peninsula gym fees paid for by Galen, Victor, Shun, Jason, Sho, Richard, and Billy. 8th game on 8/27.
