24 Hour vs Big Gamerz Moved Up to 2:45PM
MAY 19, 2005 (6:00PM) -- At the request of the Big Gamerz because they reportedly have players playing in another league in Hayward at 4:00PM, the 24 Hour vs Big Gamerz game in Oakland has been moved up 15 minutes to 2:45PM. We sincerely hope that the Big Gamerz have attempted to contact the other league to see if the other league can budge a little too on their behalf.
24 Hour vs Big Gamerz Changed to 3PM
MAY 19, 2005 (2:00PM) -- Due to a gym scheduling issue at Ira Jinkins, the tipoff for 24 Hour vs Big Gamerz needs to be changed to 3pm. There are no other alternatives besides 3pm except for 7pm. Sorry about that...
Tide Shifts With an All Eastern Winners Bracket
MAY 19, 2005 (8:00AM) -- The Big Gamerz and 24 Hour went to SF and turned the tide on the entire league by sending the T.L Bombers and Mom's Friends, respectively, to the Losers Bracket.
The Big Gamerz held off the T.L Bombers 32-27 despite allowing the game to be pro-rated due to the T.L Bombers being cut off by the Bay to Breakers race (this despite Dream League warning the T.L Bombers' captain of just that). According to the scoresheet, it looks as if the game might have gone into overtime, although the teenage statkeeper has the score after the 4th quarter listed at 28-26, which would mark the first time in basketball history that a game went into overtime with the score not tied. In any case, let's assume it must have been 26-26. It appears that TLB got off to a 17-6 deficit to start the game, then came back as would be expected of this gritty team, holding the Big Gamerz to zero points in the final quarter before getting outscored in overtime. Mike Mendoza led the way for the Big Gamerz with 13 points and 6 boards. Ty Tek led TLB with 10 points.
In the other game, 24 Hour burst out of the gate with an 18-9 first quarter lead, then Mom's Friends made matters worse by shooting 0-for-7 until Eric Pan finally nailed a three-pointer with 4:20 remaining in the quarter. By the end of the half, 24 Hour was up 34-16 and Mom's Friends could not get a rally going. 24 Hour dominated Mom's on the boards in that 2nd quarter, racking up 17 rebounds versus Mom's Friends' 9. Then in the 3rd quarter, 24 Hour dished out a combined 6 assists while Mom's Friends turned the ball over 4 times. If not for James Yen's three treys that quarter, Mom's Friends would have been buried deep in the sand. Mason Chin led 24 Hour with 16 pts 9 reb, with Steve Na tallying 9 pts 10 reb 5 ast, Han Pham totaling 10 pts 6 reb 6 ast, and Li Maw adding 13 pts. Pan scored 20 pts 11 reb, but shot just 6-for-20 and committed 5 turnovers. Yen ended up with 5 from downtown good for 18 total pts, while captain Felix Wong grabbed 10 boards but shot an anemic 1-for-16 from the field.
Free Agents Oakland finally gets to play against an opponent in the Losers Bracket, which will be the T.L Bombers, since Mom's Friends has a higher seed than the T.L Bombers. The winner of that game will go onto meet Mom's Friends about two-and-a-half hours later that afternoon (due to scheduling constraints). Due to database issues, please be advised that the schedule below does not reflect this in chronological order.
Meanwhile, the Winners Bracket features a brewing rivalry between 24 Hour and the Big Gamerz in Oakland. The Big Gamerz have won both regular season meetings, but you can throw history out the window as the winner of this game will have a heavy advantage going into championship week, whereby the Losers Bracket teams have to duke it out merely for the right to face the Winners Bracket winner on the same day. And with both 24 Hour and the Big Gamerz from the Eastern Conference, the first championship game will definitely be held in Oakland (even though due to database issues we must list it below as "TBD"). Such is the nature of the beast in the cut-throat double-elimination format!
