PLAYOFF BRACKETS

MARCH 11, 2004 -- Last Sunday, #1 Pacific Coast Real Estate edged #3 Game Time, then forced a winner-take-all championship repeat for 3/21 by beating the Winners Bracket leader, #5 Alliance.
In the last Losers Bracket game, Karl Gusner rallied PCRE with two critical three-pointers off of broken plays late in the game against Game Time. Meanwhile, Game Time shooters Matt Drechsler and Greg Tom shot a combined 1-for-8 in the fourth.
Down 45-43 with under 2 minutes left, PCRE's Jeremy Lee got held up with the ball deep in the corner. Gusner flew around from the opposite baseline, got the ball and launched a three-ball, corner pocket. Game Time's Brian Liang then got a basket down low to put his team back up 47-46. But Gusner got fouled on the ensuing play and made both free throws to give PCRE the 48-47 lead.
With 24 seconds remaining, Game Time had a chance to win it. Drechsler got the ball 10 feet away, left side. One pump fake and the defender was gone, but the open shot was too hard off the bank. Game Time was forced to foul Gusner, who got the rebound and sealed the deal at 50-47 with under 10 seconds by making both free throws. Tom's desperation three at the buzzer missed badly and Game Time was sent packing. Gusner finished with 22 pts. Liang had 20 pts 12 reb and Drechsler scored 13. Tom, Game Time's other scorer who showed up late and played only the 2nd half, came up empty on 0-for-6 shooting.
Then we had the 3-Point Shootout, in which former champion Gusner regained the throne by beating out newcomer Anthony Wang of Alliance in the final. Last year's champion, Jeff Lee of Alliance, failed to qualify for the final round. Here were the scores:
Player, Team, Round 1, Round 2
Jeff Lee, Alliance, 12
Anthony Wang, Alliance, 15, 11
Ed Lu, Giant Pandas, 17, 8
Mike Oberhaus, Giant Pandas, 4
Karl Gusner, PCRE, 17, 15
Matt Drechsler, Game Time, 8
Jeremy Lee, PCRE, 7
In the Alliance-PCRE championship, PCRE stormed to a 23-10 first quarter lead. Jack Chin and Hubert Liu shot a combined 0-for-7 in the first frame. Liu hit just four field goals in the game, finishing with 18 pts. Chin finished with 15 pts and Gary Chern also added 15 for Alliance. Gusner led PCRE with 18 pts, while Ryan Dunn added 15 pts and Yuki Yamazaki stepped up with 11 off the bench. Alliance managed to shave 7 pts off the first quarter lead, but the game was predominantly in PCRE's hands, winning 71-65.
