BBCC Holds Off Big Dawgs
MARCH 5, 2004 -- #5 SFFD survived yet another Losers Bracket slugfest, this time against #3 Beacon, 63-60. SFFD's Scott Darmstadt once again started off hot and ended up with 21 pts. But without the triple-double efforts of Eric Ellis, who was not available, SFFD's other scorer Justin Brown was held to just 9 pts. Eric Newman quietly made a huge difference for SFFD, with 15 pts 14 reb 5 ast. For Beacon, the shots were not falling and when Jerry Showers fouled out midway through the 3rd quarter, much of Beacon's quickness and outside shooting was taken away. Maurice Brown led Beacon with 21 pts 11 reb 4 blk.
In the Winners Bracket showdown between #1 BBCC and the #2 Big Dawgs, BBCC came out strong with a 17-12 first quarter, which then stretched to 32-24 at halftime and 53-40 by the end of the third. BBCC's Roy Byrd neutralized the near triple-double average of the Big Dawg's Kareem Benjamin, who still finished with 11 reb 6 ast, but scored just 6 pts. Jarius Michael and Mark Smith neutralized each other with 18 pts 10 reb and 20 pts 9 reb, respectively, but the Big Dawg's Brent Wyse shot just 1-for-15. So BBCC was in control most of the game, with the lead reaching 15 pts in the 3rd quarter, but beware of the Dawgs -- it's amazing that they only lost by 4, with Manish Nandani with another steady 18 pts. This time, it was the quickness and defense of BBCC prevailing over the height of the Big Dawgs.
This means that the Big Dawgs will face SFFD in the last Losers Bracket game on Tuesday at 7pm. SFFD can match the Big Dawgs' height, but the Big Dawgs have slightly more speed while SFFD will be looking to grind it out. The winner faces BBCC on Thursday, and BBCC has the upper hand as the survivor of the Winners Bracket with zero losses thus far in the double-elimination tournament.
