Thelonious Dunk Grabs Their 1st Win | |
| This was their Super Bowl, no two ways about it. 0-5 met 0-5 on Thursday when Thelonious Dunk met the Good News Bears and there was as much interest in this game as there was the night before when Jeremy Lin and his Golden State Warriors came through town to take on the Knicks down at The Garden. Serious. Something had to give and at the end of it, man, Chris Sung must have been bummin' that he had to miss it. TD's reserve small forward was the lone Dunker to miss out on his team's 57-48 win over GNB, but word is that he did join the post-game celebration, footing the bill no less, only too happy to pay after learning about the winsome outcome.
TD earned this game on the strength of better shooting (but not from 3-point range), better rebounding, and a better 2nd half. Despite finding the bottom of the net only once on 11 3-point tries, TD recorded their first win because from 2-point range, they went 22/44. 50% will win you 7 out of 10 games, it's a proven rule. They out-rebounded GNB 48-26 (no player had less than 5 boards.) And after finding themselves down 28-22 at half (the first time GNB ever led at half), they exploded for a 35-20 backhalf. Early for GNB, Rich Lee, Sungjin Kim (13 pts/6 rbs), and Wayne Van kept GNB competitive, but in the 3rd, Young Yu got on track for TD, scoring 9 3rd period points while Chris Di and Benny Suh (10 pts/5 rbs) sprinkled in plenty of shots for good measure. After a 17-8 3rd to give them some breathing room, TD rode home in the 4th as Yu and Di (14 pts/9 rbs) each scored 6 while John Ng dropped home 2 jumpers for good measure. TD's defense had something to do with it of course as after a healthy 1st half, at one point in the 2nd half, across a duration that spanned from the 3rd to the 4th, GNB didn't record a point for about 7 straight minutes. A late run, including a pair of 3's by Lee (19 pts) cut the score to 51-45 to give GNB hope, but it was a hope that would prove false as Yu (18 pts/5 rbs/3 assts) iced the game from the free throw line late. Ah, ice - or rather on it. After this titanic win to get the monkey off their backs, that's how Sung served up the champagne for his team. |
