Yale Snaps Two-Game Slide |
| August 10, 2008 – New York, NY (DL) – Things can change on a dime.
You hear that phrase all the time.
One day, you could be working at Bear Stearns and the next, your company could be getting rolled into JP Morgan thus forcing your lay-off.
One day, you could be feeling sorry for yourself after a dumping from your girlfriend, and the next, you meet the future Mrs. when you least expect it.
One day, you could be on a two-game losing skid, down 15-3 in the 1st quarter against the Purple Cobras, in a heated time-out, and the next thing you know, you're on the right side of a 55-37 lopsided score.
 Yaletown gets it together. |
If you’re Yaletown, changing on a dime is something you know a lot about as they were the team who had suffered 2 losses in a row and was staring a third straight loss in the face early in Sunday’s game against the Cobras before whipping it around.
Whipping might not even be a strong enough word as, after a 16-8 losing 1st, they turned it on and powered past Purple 20-9, 12-4, and 15-8 in the remaining three stanzas.
Yes, that adds up to a 47-21 demolishing across that span and thanks to it, Yale (4-2) not only snaps their mini-slide, but become the first team in the AL to clinch a double-elimination card for the playoffs. (Already?)
After getting blitzed to start the game by Mark Yiin (19 pts) and Roberto Ko (9 pts, 3 stls), during a time-out, while Brian Yang lit into his team for their lack of effort, captain Sung-Mo Cho steadied the troops with a speech only Dan Hawkins could appreciate, and after it, whatever magic words were uttered worked, so Yale ripped off an incredible 2nd quarter in which change on a dime held a different meaning.
Derik Kumagai (8 pts, 14(!) rebounds, 8 dimes, 5 steals, jeez), who previous to Yale’s 2 recent losses had never lost in a Yaletown uniform, went ballistic with the assistive dimes and seemingly collected all 8 that he had in the quarter, all on feeds to Yang, who scored 7 lay-ups in the frame on his way to a 9/12 afternoon for 21 points, 10 boards, and 4 dimes of his own (oh, but that missed wide open lay-up…)
Yale basically ran the short-handed Cobras, who only suited 5, into the ground and pounded them with uncontested shot after uncontested shot. Most of DK and Cho’s shots were off (a combined 5/29), but with Nelson Wong (10 points, 8 rbs) and Fred Lee (11 pts) going 9/20 between them, and Purple’s inability to put the ball in the basket after the 1st (they went just 8/33 from the 2nd through the 4th), Yale won with a gusto to sweep the season series against Ko’s Cobras. (Or is that Karl Ngok’s? Who is the captain? And if he is, where’s he been?)
Even without key cogs Wilson Wang and Eden Chuang, even with Cho on a 3/24 slump over his last two games, even with Yang shooting free throws as if his name were Shaq, Yale got back on the winning track.
Don’t ever count out a champion, cause, uh, hey, things can change on a dime. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
