Fury Bounce Back, Pick Up First Win |
| July 23, 2008 – Brooklyn, NY (DL) – It was HBI who was the veteran DL team in this contest, but the rookie FBNYC Fury squad looked every bit more poised, polished, and primed in taking a 49-44 decision Wednesday night at the Polydome in Crooklyn.
While HBI added a key cog in their wheel named Gene Kim (but still wonder if Brian Liang will ever show up cause in other’s experience with him on their team, he rarely does), the Fury flashed signs of brilliance in bouncing back boisterously from their season opening defeat on Sunday to the Hypebeasts.
Nothing like a win to erase the memory of a loss quickly.
Now, it’s not as if the Fury just picked up a basketball yesterday. No, the core of their team (Alvin Wang, Rich Chang, and James Choi – a no show) has been playing together for awhile now, but in bringing their game into the DL, onlookers have been curious to see how they would get on.
In particular, Alex Cho, a player who has made much noise in FastBreakNYC, has been making the most noise here for his new team. Is it possible to grant rookie of the season status after just 2 games? Well, keep your eye on him.
Cho led the Fury with 16 points, 9 boards, and 2 steals and even though the Fury nearly fumbled the game away in the 2nd half, they had enough to hang on and even their record at 1-1.
Cho and James Lam got the Fury off to a fast start while Myong Choi and GK did the same for HBI in the 1st, but in the 2nd, the game turned in a big way for the Fury as they turned a tight game into a 12-point lead at the half with a 12-3 run to close the half – those 3 for HBI coming only on a Choi (19 pts, 2 stls) buzzer-beating 30-footer.
The 12-0 Fury blitz featured a lot of Cho, Lam, and ray of (Brian) Sun as each guy had 4 points a piece to contribute. It was all part of a 22-9 2nd that, upon closer examination, showed all 9 HBI points coming from Choi – nice work by the MC, but bad by the rest of his team.
One man alone a game cannot win (is that Yoda speak?) and so as Choi hungered for help in the 3rd, he continued to get nothing.
Actually, nothing much happened in the 3rd for either team.
The Fury put up 6 after the 22-point explosion (night and day, man) and HBI only put up 5 – 3 coming from your friendly Gamma bartender again. (Sing it T-Pain). Still, the Fury held a comfortable double digit advantage heading into the 4th.
And although HBI’s defense tightened it up and held the Fury to just 7 in the last quarter (only 13 in the entire 2nd half – nice), they spent the entire time playing catch up, but never actually successfully being able to.
This sequence early in the 4th summed up the experience: After Victor Chia (8 pts, 7 rbs) got a put-back, GK (11 pts, 8 rbs) had a good look at a 3 but missed it to which Sun (14 pts, 4 stls) got the board and found Cho quickly on the other end for a Fury 3 instead.
It was a 6-point swing that went from perhaps cutting the Fury lead to 8 to giving the Fury a 14-point lead instead.
Still, HBI gave it a go and had it down to 3-points with less than 20 seconds after MC connected from downtown and then got possession of the ball back when Lam (10 pts, 6 rbs, 5 stls) turned the ball over with 13.6.
GK missed a game-tying try and Lam redeemed himself by icing two freebies.
Nearly fumbled, but found a way.
