101 Flunks the Fury by 30 |
| August 16, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – This wasn’t so much a game as it was an exercise.
An exercise in play sets and lay-up drills for the New York Fury.
An exercise in futility for the defending champs (now chumps), M&A 101.
The Fury treated this game like a scrimmage, throwing anything and everything at a severely stupid 101 team, who suddenly look absolutely nothing like the chip winning franchise they were yester-season.
Much of it has to do with the fact that their team has been stripped of virtually everyone who donned the black and white jerseys they wore before. This season, in green and white that has so far been unbecoming, they’ve looked as bad as the Boston Celtics have in recent seasons in the NBA, only worse.
Much has already been publicized about how they’ve lost the likes of Nic Echevestre, Jervis Yau, Jon Chin, and Nelson Wong, but this season they’ve also been without the services of all-league center Brian Liang, Jeremy Ueno, and Young Yu for much of it. Their prized free agents Len Kamdang and Wilson Wang haven’t arrived to New York yet, and their replacement players haven’t exactly been gellin’.
Most of it, on this night, had to do however with simply how dominant the Fury were.
The final score read 79-49, and really folks, it wasn’t even that close.
After a semi-competitive 1st, the Fury outscored 101 the rest of the way 57-32.
Getting a hot start from Christian Stevens, who simply abused the paint, the Fury rode outstanding guardplay the rest of the way to the finish line.
Phil Moon finished with a game high 18 points on 9 of 11 shooting. Shawn de los Reyes made his season debut and deposited 13 points and 3 assists despite crying for foul seemingly each time he touched the ball. And the Fury perimeter defense made life a living hell for Usama Nausrudeen, who finished with 15 points but on 6 of 19 shooting.
Nausrudeen was the only 101 player in double digits and that in and of itself may have been enough to drive Yu, who was making his season debut (and as it turns out season exit), to the edge.
Yu, who has been feeling great as of late after returning from an off-the-court altercation last season, found himself unable to co-exist with Nausrudeen in this game and without any fanfare, announced after the game that he was leaving the team. Whether he will sit the season out or demand a trade and resurface elsewhere is yet to be seen.
Chalk up another original 101 member who is now gone.
The team is in such disarray, they could become the greatest disgrace to be called a champion since, well, since forever. When’s the last time a winner seemingly fell so hard?
Here’s the thing though.
Does anyone care?
Most of 101’s players are new additions and they aren’t concerned about defending their title since they didn’t win a title with them anyways.
Chris Youn didn’t care as he powered home 12 points and 14 big rebounds. James Li looked lithe and unconcerned as well with 101’s plight as he hammered home 9 points and several warm-up dunks. Albert Chung had a career high 8 points including a pair of killer 3’s. Ren Hsieh controlled the tempo and scored 7 while handing out 4 assists.
Essentially the only Fury fellas who didn’t make any noise were Jeff Moy and Alvin Wang, who arrived well into the 4th quarter.
By then, the Fury was up about 40 or 50 points, 101 looked like they had their souls, soles, tonsils, brains, and heads removed, and within moments, the exercise was finally over.
