Hypebeasts Finish Another Perfect Season |
| October 10, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – Roswell had a legitimate shot.
They let Mark Yiin go, he got hot in stretches, the team shot better from the field and had more assists and blocks than the Hypebeasts, held a 5 point lead in the 4th quarter…and still found a way to lose.
That’s just the Hypebeast mystique doing its thang.
The Hypebeasts are so deep, rarely push the panic button, and have a knack for forcing the timely turnover. All these things came into play late as Hype held off Roswell 49-43 to finish another perfect season.
Last season, on their way to winning the AAA crown, Hype also went 9-0, which means that over the course of their two seasons of existence in the Dream League, they’ve haven’t lost a single regular season game. (They did lose one playoff game last season.)
Yiin was determined from the onset to put a dent in Hype’s quest for perfection as he started spraying jumpers on pull-ups from anywhere he wanted in the 1st quarter. Were it not for some early heroics by captain Virgilio Borbo, who recognized the need to calm his team on such a big night, Roswell could have held a healthy lead setting a bad tone for Hype.
Yiin finished with 9 points in the 1st, but Borbo’s 5 and 5 by Howie Chu kept Hype close, down only 14-12 headed into the 2nd.
This is when the turnover plague started to haunt Roswell.
As Hype scored 10 unanswered – started by back-to-back Leon Chu 3’s - to open up a 22-14 lead, Roswell turned the ball over more than a halfback with a case of fumblitis. They didn’t score their first point until 1:02 remained in the half on a Roberto Ko free throw and were lucky they were just down 22-17 after Yiin hit a pull-up jumper before the half.
The two who scored the meager 3 in the 2nd for Roswell came alive and did the bulk of the scoring in the 3rd – Ko with 4 and Yiin with 5 – and by the time Yiin swished all three tries from the line after getting fouled in the act behind the arc, Hype held only a 30-29 lead leading into the final 9 minutes.
After H-Chu put Hype up by 3 with a put-back to open the quarter, Roswell ran off 8 straight – all contributed to by Yiin. A dish to Simon Huang for three, an adjustment of his spectacles before finishing a drive, and then a three of his own, and Roswell suddenly led 37-32.
Just as quick as Roswell put up 8 though, Hype answered with 9 straight to go on top 41-37. Turnovers and strong takes by Hype helped them snag back the lead.
Yiin, who poured in 23 points and had 4 assists, wasn’t done however and hit another pull up J to bring Roswell within two.
Finally, however, the weight of the world fell in on Roswell’s shoulders as Hype would not be denied their right to perfection.
Tim Chen (10 pts, 8 rbs) converted two quick baskets off of turnovers that put Hype ahead by a lead too insurmountable in the last 30 seconds for even The Professor to solve.
Hype forced 23 turnovers and were led by Ian Yu who had 5 steals single-handedly to go along with 11 points and 4 rebounds. H-Chu and Borbo also added 10 points apiece.
Roswell dropped their third straight and Hype now has at least three weeks of rest before they go sniffing for another title.
They duplicated their perfect regular season, but this time around, in the playoffs, they can do better.
They’re going to try to win it all without losing a game. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
