Hype Stays Perfect | Cruisers Beat Cruisers
| October 4, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – Only in the Dream League can you have one game in a division where you are teammates, and then an hour later, be enemies on opposing teams in another division.
In an AL match-up featuring the undefeated Hypebeasts and Penn State Alumni & Friends/Relatives, who were looking to prove something by picking up a quality win in their so-far successful season, Hype’s Howie and Leon Chu (brothers) met David Cheng and Garry Yeung, two players from PSAFR who would be their teammates on the RL Cruisers in an NL game next.
Let’s focus on these interconnected four:
With a leaky roof causing more than moist moments on one end of the floor plaguing this game, early on, Hype headed out to a 21-14 lead after one with nary a contribution from Howie or Cheng. Yeung got a drive and Leon collected a 3, but it was his teammate Victor Ng who had the most to say as he bagged three straight 3’s and Tim Chen closed out the quarter with 5 straight to give Hype the cushy margin.
With Cheng barking out orders on the sidelines, Yeung – as well as the Chu brothers – took over the game in the 2nd by making plays happen left and right, all in succession.
Yeung fed James Gonzales for a three, Howie and Leon – perhaps used to hearing Cheng instruct them when they are Cruisers – responded also with a jumper and another 3, and then Yeung threw back-to-back dimes to Yohan Lee (10 pts, 11 rbs) and Jason Chan (10 rbs, 2 blks).
Cruiser prints were all over this game.
But in the 3rd, the newest Cruisers (Howie and Leon just joined RLC this season) were the ones reaping the biggest benefits as their team kept pulling ahead – and, really, they were hardly doing anything.
Why lift a finger when Chen is chiming in with jumpers (11 pts)? Why make a move when Ng’s got it going on from downtown (another pair of 3’s for 5 total and a season high 18 pts, 7 rbs)? Why jet down the court when Jimmy Lau is running rampant and scoring with ease (8 pts)?
So as Yeung didn’t so much as attempt a field goal in the 2nd half and Cheng was chastising him for letting the recent news in the media about him becoming the “Rip Hamilton of Dream League” getting into his head, the Chu brothers rode their teammates' shoulders and cruised home to a 58-40 win to hang PSAFR (5-3) with a two-game losing streak.
These four players combined for 12 points, 7 rebounds, 10 assists, and a steal.
The question as to whether the Hypebeasts (8-0) could have a perfect season stays alive, but the real question, how these four would mesh for the next game against the fantastic Fury, remained to be seen…
