Fury Sinks Sonics |
| August 5, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – The New York Fury’s captain/GM, and FastbreakNYC’s current commissioner, Ren Hsieh, hails from Houston.
When he snagged Phil Moon out of a pile of players and added him to the Fury roster for this season, maybe in the back of his mind he wanted to hear it said at least once – just once.
Fine, we’ll say it. Because it deserves to be said.
"Houston, we have lift off."
Phil took the Fury to the Moon and back on Sunday as the Fury knocked off a short-handed Super Soul Sonics team 56-46 in front of a surprisingly small crowd of 5.
Usually, SSS travels in a pack with about 30-40 fans on any given day, but with the summer schedule forcing players and family alike to travel to Japan for work and play, SSS came with just a fraction of the entourage they usually travel with.
Of course, the Fury had a few missing elements out as well with Christian Stevens, Jeff Moy, and Roger Redhead going AWOL, and so, as it were, the not so super Soul Sonics took on the not as furious Fury on Sunday.
Moon made the most of these missing elements and demonstrated how high he could take his team as he launched himself onto the DL scene with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists to do a little and a lot of everything to help his team even up their record at 1-1.
Tom Nierenberg started out fast for SSS with two free throws and a dime to Naofumi Minamimoto (best new name) to put SSS up 4-0. Before long though, the Fury fought back with an 8-0 run capped by a Chris Youn runner.
Nierenberg collected another 10 cents and then dropped a hook shot Kareem would’ve been proud of, and as the Fury cleared the boards for put-backs, the game went into the 2nd with the Fury ahead 12-10.
They’d stay ahead – 24-21 – at the half as a plethora of things came in threees.
For the Fury, Hsieh and Dave Zheng each dropped triples. Youn had a three-point play. And Moon connected on three free throws.
On the flip side, Yasu Miyamoto and Sho Koshimura hit one and two treys respectively.
It all added up to a three-point Fury lead and the three theme would not, could not, did not stop in the three-quarter.
Toshi Koizumi made three nice plays in a row to start the half: 1) a three-ball, 2) a dime to Nierenberg, and 3) a jumper – all of which gave SSS a 28-26 lead.
Youn (11 pts, 14 rbs) came back and scored on three separate occasions – either from the line of the floor – and the game shuttled back and forth.
Eugene Oka dropped a triple and then it was Moon’s turn to make a ménage a trois of good plays: 1) a dish to Albert Chung, 2) an ankle breakin’ move that freed himself up for a J, and 3) another dish to Zheng for a – what else – three.
Three times three, a nine-point lead was opened up for the Fury and from then on, in the 4th, SSS played catch up but to no avail.
Chung (11 pts, 7 rbs) scored some more, Moon kept making magic, and despite more threes from Koizumi (10 pts, 3 assts), ShoKo (11 pts, 4 stls), and Oka (10 pts, 6 rbs), the Fury finished it up with a flourish to win it comfortably.
In other words, as Hsieh no doubt likes to hear, “Houston, we had no problem.” | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
