Slappers Start Season Right |
| July 25, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – For a half, we saw two elite teams go at it against one another to the tune of a 33-30 score.
The expansion franchise (but full of veterans) Slappers were looking up from the bottom of that score to the New York Fury, who were riding 10 Christian Stevens points and a gang of 3’s – a pair each from Ren Hsieh, Jeff Moy, and Roger Redhead to the halftime lead.
Then, for a half – the 2nd half – we saw one elite team take it up another level and essentially turn a close, competitive game into a comfortable win to open what promises to be a ridiculously competitive NL season.
For the Slappers, a rookie team formed by Joe Kim, who left the Renegades to do this, they survived an 11-0 run in the 2nd by the Fury and they survived the fact that Kim looked and played lethargically (no points, 1 shot, 2 assists) after having driven back from Maryland earlier in the day.
Redhead (12 points), Stevens, and Chris Youn (11 boards) worked together early in the 3rd to put the Fury up 42-35 after a 3-point play by Youn, but after that point, the Slappers (and this will be said many times this season surely) slapped the Fury silly with a 16-0 streak to close the 3rd and went up 51-42.
Just like that.
The two James Chois (imagine that, they went out and produced another one) combined for 7 of those points and Mark Lee had 5 to go with production in the paint from the Slappers bigs – John Chung and Dave Ha (12 boards and last seen on the TSIV squad for a minute last season.)
The Fury hung tough and pulled within 6 early in the 4th, but by the 5:11 mark, after Choi (the original) dropped a bomb, it was a 10 point lead that was just too much for the Fury to close in on as the Slappers sealed the deal from the line towards the end as all the Fury could do was foul.
Balanced scoring – 3 guys in double figures and 2 guys with 9 points – paced the Slappers who were led by Lee’s 15. They shot well (41%), rebounded well (+9), and generally looked like a sleek machine in mid-season form although this was day one and some kinks were supposedly being worked out.
They will be a team to watch as their 68 points proved. Run and gun.
The Fury, who scored 56 and were led by Stevens’ 21 points and 9 rebounds, proved that when you try to run and gun with the Slappers, it can sometimes hurt.
The Fury are gonna win their share of games.
The question seems to be after their demonstration: will the Slappers lose one? | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
