D-Unit Grades Out an A With 64-48 Championship Win Over Renegades |
| Don't just stand there! |
December 17, 2006 - Brooklyn, NY (DL) - After two nail-biting semi-finals, would it be too much to ask for a similar final to cap the Gotham City Games?
Yes.
It was close for a half, and though it wasn't ever really lopsided, the New York D-Unit claimed the Gotham City Games throne with a methodical 64-48 win over the New York Renegades with an efficient, if unspectacular 2nd half.
The boxscore did not lie as the D-Unit simply applied good old fashion fundamental basketball in taking care of business.
They shot 42.9% from the floor. 42.1% from the arc (8 of 19). 70% from the line. And applied 14 assists to their 21 made shots.
He looks confused, but he's not. |
It was team basketball at its best.
Four players finished in double figures led by Ali Azizikia and Usama Nausrudeen's 17 points each. Azizikia also had 9 rebounds.
The Renegades jumped out to a 15-13 lead after one in the second meeting between these two teams of the tournament. The first was a pool play game in with the D-Unit won 68-60 when they had the 6'8" Nafi Mushriqi.
Pete Prassos (11 points, 6 steals), who missed the semi-final game, was back for the Renegades, and scored 4 points off the break and Eddie Wang (13 points) kept his hot hand in the playoffs with 5 including another 3.
The Gades kept up their pace in the 2nd, but that's when Azizikia and Nausrudeen, tourney co-MVPs, came alive with 5 triples between them - 3 from Azizikia and 2 from Nausrudeen.

Their 5 of 5 downtown display placed D-Unit up 34-28 at intermission.
After the break, it seemed the teams forgot to come back to play as neither side recorded a point for the first 5 and a half minutes of play in the 3rd.
But finally the teams picked up the pace with Joe Kim scoring 6 for the Renegades and Nausrudeen blistering with another pair of triples to go with his 5 of 7 from the stripe. Nausrudeen had all 17 of his points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
Mo Ghumman (12 points, 11 rebounds) then was the one who finished the Gades off with a 4 of 5 4th for 8 points and free throws iced the game as the Renegades struggled to a 3 of 14 quarter with very limited success from the arc (1/8) - normally a reliable weapon for them.
In the end, the D-Unit, as a 5-seed ran the table with too much talent. With a collegiate backcourt and frontcourtmen who could rebound with the poorest rebounding pro team, the D-Unit were destined to claim Gotham as their own.
Congratulations to the them - and to all the teams who came to play. Now come meet us in Vegas in February!
