Cruisers Crush Yamato, Gain Revenge

December 17, 2006 - Brooklyn, NY (DL) - The best thing about playing a team who has just beaten you is that you get a chance to right the wrong.

Some teams lose to a team and want to run for the hills. Not the New York Cruisers. They want you right away.

After dropping a 12-point decision to the Yamato Ballers on Friday night at Baruch, two days later, the Cruisers met Yamato on a different court - at Polytech - against the same teams sans Y2K.

It mattered none to the Cruisers. With or without their center Yoshi Kagitomi, Yamato had the look of a tired and weary team, which they probably were after a a grueling two days of games that took a lot out of them. One was the hard-earned win over the Cruisers, and another was their playoff game to get to this quarter-final game - a buzzer beating victory over the Tri-State InvAsian.

So after a spirited 1st half in which the Cruisers led only 38-33, fatigue really start to set in and Yamato hit the wall. A wall by the name of Tony Hu.

The #7 seed ran into a 22-8 buzz saw in the 3rd in which the #2 seeded Cruisers used 11 Hu points - including a rare 3 from him - to open the game up.

Mika Ohiorhenuan scored 6 in the frame and CB Liu 5 as Yamato looked as if they were tossing up tomatoes, going 3 of 10 from the floor.

Hu went a perfect 4 of 4 in the 4th - and CB dropped a pair of 3's - and Yamato just fell further and further behind with a 4 of 15 4th to lose the game 77-51 going away as the Cruisers moved onto the semi-finals to face the Renegades.

The Cruisers shot a ridiculous 14 of 22 in the 2nd half and 54% for the game even though they had learned that George Chan would not be making it back for the day from his snowboarding excursion.

Satoshi Nakajima led Yamato with 18 points.

Hu scored a tournament high 33 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as he went 12 of 14 from the floor and 8 of 8 from the line. CB Liu added 19 and Stan Yeung scored 11 points and had 6 assists.

Dave: Tony, if you get 33 and 15, you'll be tops in the tournament.
