Playoff Brackets for N.L./AL-O

MON 5/24 (2:00PM) -- Game Time eliminated the Wildcatz, then forced a Repeat Championship vs Hyphy. The game will be on 6/6 and occur late in the evening, per Hyphy's request and Game Time's approval...

TUE 5/18 (12:15PM) -- The young Hyphy squad finally had it all come together this past Sunday, as they upset Game Time to take command of the brackets heading into the championship. The Wildcatz must now face Game Time for survival in the Losers Bracket. With Hyphy guaranteed to be in the Championship, this means we have a new team in the finals for the first time in awhile. The previous teams have been Game Time, the Wildcatz, East Bay Cardinals, and MoneyTree -- unless I'm forgetting someone.

Thus, Game Time or Wildcatz will be playing a doubleheader this Sun 5/23. The game will be held in SF because we are unable to secure gym time on the Peninsula anymore (and have eliminated the Peninsula as an option for this Summer 2010). Should Hyphy lose this Sun 5/23, we will need to discuss with the two remaining captains when to have the championship...

TUE 5/11 (7:00PM) -- The single-elim teams got eliminated on 5/9, so the Wildcatz do not have an opponent until either Hyphy or Game Time loses. So the next round after 5/16 is 5/23 with the Final Three, then if there's a Repeat Championship, we have to look at either 5/30 or overlap into the start of the next season 6/6...

MON 5/3 (9:45PM) -- Upset city this past Sun 5/2...

Amazingly, the Losers Bracket will now feature the Wildcatz vs EBC, the two teams that faced each other in last season's championship and repeat, which the Wildcatz won. I believe the season before that, we also had the finals teams in the Losers Bracket pretty quickly off the bat. Strange, but "any given Sunday", as the saying goes.

Now, if both Game Time and Hyphy should advance to the Winners Bracket survivor game, then there will be no additional Losers Bracket team to drop down for 5/16 because both the Blazers and Laggers only have single-elim status and would be eliminated. That would make one of the next tiers of Losers Brackets disappear, which is why I have it currently listed "TBD".

You can see that we will have the Last Losers Bracket Game and Championship (most likely, depending on how the bracket turns out) on 5/23. We'll just have to play it by ear and see what happens in the quasi-double-elim format ("quasi" meaning some teams have single-elim).

The home-away splits are now updated thru 5/2 in the lower righthand table next to the roadmap and copy/pasted here...

Here are the matchups for 5/9...

p2-WB: #7 Laggers at #3 Game Time
p2-WB: #4 Hyphy at #8 Blazers
p2-LB: #2 Wildcatz at #1 East Bay Cardinals

Both Laggers and Game Time are SF, so that one's easy. For Wildcatz and EBC, and with problems with the Peninsula gyms (we will not have Peninsula gyms next season, most likely), we will have that game at the midpoint in SF. For Hyphy/Blazers, I'm considering the fact that there's more SF-based teams remaining and that the higher-seeded Hyphy is the favorite, therefore this may be the Blazers' last game, whereas if Hyphy loses, there's still a reasonable chance their next game will go back to SF. Therefore, I will put the Hyphy/Blazers game in Oakland, the Blazers' homecourt. This is all, of course, barring unforeseen circumstances.

So by the end of 5/9, we'll have these splits...

Lagg: 6 sf, 1 pen, 2 oak
GmTm: 5 sf, 1 pen, 3 oak
Blzr: 2 sf, 7 oak
EBC: 3 sf, 6 oak
Hyph: 5 sf, 1 pen, 3 oak
Catz: 5 sf, 4 pen

You can see that if the Blazers win, they are most likely in SF the next round on 5/16. Hyphy will most likely be in SF on 5/16 no matter what. But we'll just have to see how the cookie crumbles.

Playoffs seeds for NL/AL-O determined

TUE 4/27 (11:45AM) -- The seeds for the playoffs have been determined...

1. East Bay Cardinals (6-1) -- won Eastern Conference
2. Wildcatz (5-2) -- won Western Conference
3. Game Time (5-2)
4. Hyphy (4-3)
5. Red Devils (2-5) -- won head-to-head vs Tryb
6. Trybe (2-5) -- lost head-to-head vs Red, won head-to-head vs Lagg
7. Laggers (2-5) -- lost head-to-head vs Red, lost head-to-head vs Tryb
8. Blazers (2-5) -- auto-loses all tiebreakers due to fft

The EBC and Wildcatz got the #1 and #2 seeds, respectively, for winning their conferences. Just like in the real NBA, sometimes one conference is stronger than the other, and aside from pure coincidence, that is usually geographically based. We are no different, plus it saves me the hassle of trying to figure out an extra tiebreaker -- there is no need for me to determine who won the Wildcatz/GameTime head-to-head.

As you can see, the only major tiebreaker that we needed to figure out were the 2-5 teams. Unfortunately for the Blazers, when they forfeited, they automatically lost all tiebreakers. That left the Red Devils, Trybe, and Laggers. As with the NFL tiebreaker system, you first figure out who goes on top in each conference. So, between the Red Devils and Laggers, it was the Red Devils with a head-to-head win. With Trybe automatically ahead of the Blazers, we compare the Red Devils vs Trybe, which the Red Devils won. Then with that out of the way, we goto Trybe vs Laggers, and Trybe won that head-to-head. And there you have 'em.

I obviously haven't checked what would've happened if the Blazers hadn't forfeited their tiebreaker rights, but if they weren't truly the 8th seed, then their forfeit may have doomed them to a first-round matchup against the team that has been playing the most consistently: the East Bay Cardinals.

Meanwhile, Trybe's overtime victory over Hyphy basically saved them from being 1-6, and that first-round matchup vs the EBC was hence avoided.

One last tidbit: as for the home-away splits, which can be seen by scrolling down to the lower righthand table next to the roadmap below, Game Time is hereby deemed an SF team, although at least two of their players are from OAK. This is because of one those players has another team in SF and the rest of their team is from SF. If this past Sunday's depletion was any indication, OAK is not the preferred homecourt for them.

For 5/2, we have...

playoffs1: #8 Blazers at #1 East Bay Cardinals OAK
playoffs1: #7 Laggers at #2 Wildcatz PEN
playoffs1: #6 Trybe at #3 Game Time SF
playoffs1: #5 Red Devils at #4 Hyphy SF

Both the Blazers and EBC are from OAK, so that location was easy. The Laggers will travel to the PEN for Wildcatz due to the home-away balancing. Trybe will goto SF again vs Game Time due to balancing, and both Red and Hyphy are already from SF.

BYES: Byes are only allowable
under special circumstances.

If you have a bye later in the season
that is not a formally requested bye,
due to gym fluctuations and other
unforeseen circumstances, that bye is
not locked down; that week's block
of games can still be shuffled around
as necessary until you formally request
that week to be a bye for your team.

GROUND RULES:
1. Please make sure the number of
red rows (games moved from) equals
the number of green rows (games
moved to).
2. Make sure you have 7 regular
season games listed with your
team name.
3. The last 1 or 2 of 7 regular
season games are usually encoded
as inter-conference or other
special type of matchup.
4. The playoffs are pretty much
nailed down, barring unforeseen
circumstances (i.e., no byes!)
5. Any special late bye requests at
this point will require permission
from other teams to shuffle them
around.
6. Special late bye requests can
*usually* be accommodated if your
team plays a double-header some
other week. But sometimes it
depends on if your opponent is
also stuck with a double-header.

Previously posted issues pertaining to NL/AL-O

TUE 4/20 (11:15PM) -- Updated standings thru 4/18 games. Per the roadmap, a few regular season games left 4/25, then we start playoffs 5/2.

MON 4/12 (9:00PM) -- Updated standings and roadmap.

WED 4/7 (8:45AM) -- Standings updated thru 4/4 games.

TUE 3/30 (2:00PM) -- Here's the latest and greatest standings, thanks to Tony. Here's my scouting reports thus far: Hyphy: winning the games they are supposed to win, young but hungry, most energetic team in the league... Wildcatz: still the favorite to win it all (which would be a repeat), they have size, speed, experience, outside shooting, inside rebounding, hard to find a weakness... Red Devils: a bit discombobulated but hopefully the chemistry will come around soon, always will have a chance with length and athleticism... Laggers: now on 0-3 slump and, well, laggin'... East Bay Cardinals: young team keeps getting better with age, but then sometimes reverts to youthful mistakes, outside shooting has been shaky... Game Time: fastest passers in the league, they really move the ball around effectively and have great outside shooting, can their bench hold up come playoff time?... Blazers: another youthful team, tons of energy, but results in questionable outside shot selection, inside presence is there, but without experience banging down low and width, they are liable to get outmuscled in the paint... Trybe: effort to increase size has probably backfired with toll taken on chemistry, they may be better off playing small ball and 36 minutes of hell.

TUE 3/23 (11:30AM) -- Standings updated. Thanks to Tony (and Wylie, previously).

WED 3/17 (10:30PM) -- Had to pin Laggers vs EBC for 3/21, so had to make a swap... (8:30PM) -- Had to sync Laggers with common players on AL SFFA, thus sync trips to Oakland, resulting in swap of Week blocks #5 and 7... (7:45PM) -- Added standings grid.

WED 3/17 (3:00PM) -- Almost everyone voted for a diverse schedule vs being confined to SF or OAK. Here's the projected roadmap for N.L./AL-O this season. You can see the home/away count on the righthand lower table. We will rebalance during playoffs. I weighted it more towards Oakland because when the Wildcatz play an Oakland team, they "travel" to SF, the midpoint betw Peninsula and Oakland.

The only other thing to note is that 4/25 is a makeup weekend, not everyone wanted 4/4 off, and I've assumed that Game Time could have players at the 4/18 LA Showcase tourney. EBC has already reported they will not attend LA due to a schedule conflict (SF HS tourney 4/18).
THU 3/11 (7:30AM) -- Assuming we go with a rather separated SF/OAK strategy, please note that the Wildcatz' homecourt is Peninsula and when they play against an SF team, the SF team will travel over to the Peninsula. When we hit playoffs, we will even things out, so the Wildcatz should probably expect to play Round 1 outside of the Peninsula.

WED 3/10 (5:45PM) -- Trybe caught the fact that they'd be repeating against the Blazers if we stuck with the block of games in the previous post, so let's just rotate them so we have this so far...

2/28
Trybe at Blazers

3/7
Game Time at Blazers
East Bay Cardinals at Trybe
Hyphy at Red Devils
Laggers at Wildcatz

3/14
Trybe at Game Time

Wildcatz at Hyphy
Red Devils at Laggers

3/21
East Bay Cardinals at Game Time
Trybe at Blazers BYE: ALREADY PLAYED ON 2/28
Laggers at Hyphy
Wildcatz at Red Devils

...however, it doesn't have to be totally fixed this way. I've sent out an email to all captains in this division to see what they wanna do. Because of the SF teams' desire to not travel as much, here was the original plan (previous post):

- Play only the teams in your area (4 total) twice each for 6 regular season games
- Play the 7th regular season game against the opposite conference (OAK vs SF)

Here's a new proposal:

- Play the first 3 games against teams in your area
- Play the 4th game as a repeat against 1 team in your area, based on standings
- Play the 5th game as a repeat against 1 other team (not the same as the 4th game, of course), in your area, based on standings
- Play the 6th game against the opposite conference, based on standings
- Play the 7th game against the opposite conference, based on standings

WED 3/10 (1:00PM) -- Here's the first core dump. First of all, the younger SF teams all have trouble getting over to Oakland, so I have no choice but to split the conferences as follows and have each of the four teams in each conference play against each other twice for 6 games. Then the 7th game will be an inter-conference battle, and I'm not sure who gets the homecourt for those yet. We'll play that by ear...

WESTERN CONFERENCE
Laggers
Wildcatz
Hyphy
Red Devils

EASTERN CONFERENCE
East Bay Cardinals
Trybe
Game Time
Blazers

...This means that Game Time, a team with players on both sides of the Bay, will just have to just suck it up and play all its 6 games in Oakland. I'd probably put their 7th game in SF. FYI, the East Bay Cardinals would play in SF, but only if it were a full-size gym. Since we don't have those anymore, they're in Oakland exclusively as well.

Here's the core dump until I can figure out Easter 4/4, then I'll pretty it up in table format...
