Prodigies win A.L. championship!
MON 5/24 (11:00PM) -- The Prodigies defeated Problems in the third sudden death overtime as Sean Caiola scored on a layup on the first possession. Prior to that, Mike Lee once again bailed the Prodigies out of a certain defeat (which would've forced a Repeat Championship) by hitting a high-arcing trey from the top of the circle as time expired, to send the game into the first overtime (the second overtime was a stalemate).
This may have trumped yet another candidate for "greatest dreamleague game ever", which has been discussed on the 6FT-OSF page (link above). After reading the 6FT-OSF post last week, Prodigies captain Torrent Lee reminded me of the epic clash against now-dormant The Ocho from San Jose...
The game was up and down all game The Ocho must have had a record set for the amount of three-pointers made, primarily by point guard Safi Mojadidi, big swingman Mostafa Asefi ("Moose") -- both of whom play for the Afghan national team -- and their center, the Bill Laimbeer-ish trey-shooting Joe Momand.
The Prodigies were leading by over 10+ points at halftime, but with less than two minutes left in the game the Ocho had a five-point lead.
Barry Lee hit a three-pointer to bring the Prodigies within two points. Ocho got to the foul line and made 1-for-2 free throws and Torrent Lee hit one from downtown to tie the game. Ocho then hit another trey with 0:03 left on the clock to go up by three.
Mike Lee got the inbound pass near halfcourt and threw up a long-range missile that got tipped in the air but still had enough juice to go in to force overtime.
Again, there were two overtimes that went back and forth and the game still ended up in a tie before sudden death. The Prodigies' Tim Tiansing got the tip over the Ocho's big man and on the ensuing possession, Mike Lee got the ball in the high post, jabbed right and went left baseline for the winning bucket.
That merely left the Prodigies with a Repeat Championship immediately following.
The second game also had three overtimes before it was finally won with Ocho missing a game winning jumper on the right wing. OKAY, NOW THAT HAD TO BE THE GREATEST SET OF TWO CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES EVER.
Anyways, for this game against Problems, the Prodigies had an 18-point lead heading into halftime that slowly melted away as Ross Hiroshima started draining some threes. Things looked well in hand for the Problems to stage perhaps the greatest comeback ever in a division as high as AL, only to be undone by Mike Lee's buzzer-beater.

L-R: Tim Tiansing, Quentin Wu, Mike Lee, Barry Lee, Torrent Lee, Sean Caiola, Pat Ayson, Rich Twu.
Here's the final bracket...

Playoff Brackets for A.L./AAA-O
TUE 5/18 (12:30PM) -- Pretty straightforward progression in the brackets for this upcoming 5/23. If the Prodigies lose and there's a Repeat Championship needed, we will discuss with both remaining captains when to have the Repeat Championship...

TUE 5/11 (9:15PM) -- Remember that on 5/9, BGmz/Prob was a bye since BGmz couldn't field a team and Prob didn't want to advance by forfeit, so this Sun 5/16 they will play, then the winner will play against the Prodigies and the loser will play Good Sires. Again, this will occur in SF because of Problems' 4:2 home:away split. If BGmz survives, then next week, they'll be in OAK. For 5/23 we'll be back on track, with a potential Repeat Championship on either 5/30 or spilling into the start of next season on 6/6 (we'll cross that bridge only if we have to)...

Oops, I just realized Prodigies' record should be 8-1, not 7-1. I'll fix it next week since it's kind of a pain to generate these image files.
TUE 5/4 (8:00AM) -- Here are the AL/AAA-O playoff brackets and matchups for 5/9 and onward...

No one is currently in the Losers Bracket, but with all double-elim status teams playing this Sun 5/9, we will definitely have two teams there for 5/16. So, it's a pretty straightforward march to the championship. If there's a Repeat Championship needed, we'll figure it out later.
Here are the straight matchups for 5/9...
p2-WB: #4 Big Gamerz at #1 Problems p2-WB: #3 Good Sires at #2 Prodigies AL
Here are the home-away splits thru 5/2...
| # | gym | team name | bye | sf | o | | e2 | o | Big Gamerz | 4/4 | 2 | 5 | | w3 | sf | Problems | 4/4 | 4 | 2 | | w5 | sf | Prodigies AL | 4/18 | 6 | 2 | | w8 | sf | Good Sires | 4/4 | 6 | 2 |
As you can see, the Big Gamerz unfortunately drew a team, Problems, that has only played 4 at home against 2 away. The Big Gamerz, meanwhile, have had 5 at home, 2 away. If we put the game in Oakland, the splits become Problems 4 home, 3 away and Big Gamerz 6 home, 2 away. If we put the game in SF, then it's Problems 5 home, 2 away and Big Gamerz 5 home, 3 away. As such, I must choose to put the game in SF to have more of a balance than not.
Meanwhile, both the Prodigies and Good Sires are based out of SF. After 5/9, the Prodigies and Good Sires will both have had 7 at home, 2 away.
This means that, whatever happens on 5/9, the Big Gamerz will most certainly be playing in Oakland on 5/16 (either against the Prodigies or Good Sires).
So, as usual, we will just take each home-away situation on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately, the Big Gamerz get the shorter end of the stick for 5/9, and that's in avoidance of Problems getting really shafted. Things will balance out a little better after that.

| Playoff seeds for AL/AAA-O determined
TUE 4/27 (12:45PM) -- Here are the playoff seeds for AL/AAA-O...
1. Problems (6-1) -- won head-to-head vs Pdgs, won Pacific Conf 2. Prodigies AL (6-1) 3. Good Sires (4-3) -- won head-to-head vs BGmz, won Northwest Conf 4. Big Gamerz (4-3) -- lost head-to-head vs Sire, won Eastern Conf 5. SF Free Agents AAA-O (3-4) -- won head-to-head vs ADay 6. All Day (3-4) -- lost head-to-head vs SFFA 7. Ballin' Since Birth (2-5)
Remember, in a 3-group NBA format, the top 4 seeds are still determined by standings (this was the Dallas Mavericks rule implemented several years ago). Therefore, the Prodigies still retain their #2 ranking. As such, Problems' final regular season win over the Prodigies this past Sun 4/25 earned themselves a first-round bye, since there is no #8 seed. So, here are the matchups for 5/2...
playoffs1: bye: #1 Problems playoffs1: #7 Ballin' Since Birth at #2 Prodigies AL playoffs1: #6 All Day at #3 Good Sires playoffs1: #4 Big Gamerz at #5 SF Free Agents AAA-O
If you look at the home/away splits in the lower righthand table next to the roadmap, you will see the balancing of the home-away at work. Not all of the splits add up to 7 regular season games because of the move of the Ballaholics to REC-SF, as well as All Day's doubleheader in SF a couple weeks ago.
BSB has made only 1 trip to SF, so they travel to the Prodigies. All Day and Good Sires are both in SF anyways. Finally, Big Gamerz has made 1 trip to SF, while the SFFA have made 2 trips to OAK.
FYI, I don't plan to be updating the roadmap all that much from here on out since you will soon see playoff brackets and can deduce the roadmap from there.

BYES: Byes are only allowable under special circumstances. If you have a bye later in the season that is not a formally requested bye, due to gym fluctuations and other unforeseen circumstances, that bye is not locked down; that week's block of games can still be shuffled around as necessary until you formally request that week to be a bye for your team.
GROUND RULES: 1. Please make sure the number of red rows (games moved from) equals the number of green rows (games moved to). 2. Make sure you have 7 regular season games listed with your team name. 3. The last 1 or 2 of 7 regular season games are usually encoded as inter-conference or other special type of matchup. 4. The playoffs are pretty much nailed down, barring unforeseen circumstances (i.e., no byes!) 5. Any special late bye requests at this point will require permission from other teams to shuffle them around. 6. Special late bye requests can *usually* be accommodated if your team plays a double-header some other week. But sometimes it depends on if your opponent is also stuck with a double-header.

A.L./AAA-O roadmap posted
TUE 3/23 (11:45AM) -- Standings updated thanks to Tony (and Wylie last week).
WED 3/17 (8:15PM) -- Standings and remaining full roadmap posted. Pinned 4/18 Good Sires vs Ballaholics, which then logistically got moved to 2/28 after-the-fact. Therefore, Sire/Blhl will have a bye on 4/18, which is preferred for the league because we do not have one SF gym that day. Also moved Pdgy/BSB to 4/4 due to Pdgy bye request 4/18.
WED 3/10 (1:45PM) -- First of all, there are 6 SF teams and 2 OAK teams. There are 8 teams, so every team plays each other and we get 7 regular season games. However, what we'll do is have all 6 SF teams visit the 2 OAK teams. That means at the end of the regular season, the OAK teams will have played 7 homecourt and 0 road games. Each SF team will have 5 home and 2 away. So, when we start the playoffs, all the games will be in SF (unless the two OAK teams happen to play each other), until at least the 2nd round when things start to balance out (e.g., 7 home and 2 away games for all the teams still alive).
Also, since we kind of have two teams in OAK that are "out there", let's split the 8-team division into 3 conferences. I don't really think it makes much difference. We'll go by NBA rules for 3 conferences (well, they call them divisions): the 3 conference winners are guaranteed one of the top four seeds...
