24 Monstars win AAA-SJ championship!

WED 5/26 (8:00AM) -- Congratulations to the 24 Monstars, who defeated AlphaKennyOne to win the AAA-SJ championship. It is their 2nd straight championship. If the team has a picture, please have your captain email it to me with the player names and I will post it here. Here's the final bracket...

AAA-SJ Playoff Brackets

TUE 5/18 (1:30PM) -- AlphaKennyOne forces a Repeat Championship for this Sun 5/23...

TUE 5/11 (10:00PM) -- No change from the last post below. Hope you guys enjoyed 5/9 Mothers Day off.

TUE 5/4 (8:15AM) -- We will take 5/9 off for Mothers Day unless all three teams contact me before it's too late to say that they want to play on 5/9. That means we will have a Repeat Championship, if necessary on 5/23 and there can be no bye requests up through then...

Pretty straightforward for the Championship weekend 5/16 (unless there's a Repeat Championship if 24 Monstars lose, which would then be 5/23 as mentioned). Here are the matchups for 5/16...

Last LB Game: #4 Go Getters at #1 AlphaKennyOne
Championship: Winner-GGet/AKO at #3 24 Monstars

TUE 4/27 (9:30PM) -- Here's the latest and greatest playoff bracket. The "mini-final-four" in the Losers Bracket is now apparent. We do not repeat a previously matched playoff game, unless it is our only resort, so that we keep that first elimination relevant. Thus, we have an interesting #2 vs #5 and #4 vs #6 setup...

WED 4/21 (11:45AM) -- I took at look at last season's AAA-SJ brackets and liked what I saw, so I'm going back to the format where we give the two losers in the first round of a 6-team bracket a bye this upcoming week, have the Winners Bracket play, and the two losers from the Winners Bracket join the two losers from last week.

The other way to do it is to force the two teams that lost in the opening round to play, but from a scheduling standpoint, it's really weird moving on in the Losers Bracket with just three teams. It's a lot more elegant this way and when I experimented with it last season, I think it worked well.

When we determine our final four in the Losers Bracket after 4/25 games, we will "re-seed" and avoid repeat matchups. Re-seeding means the top-seeded team in the Losers Bracket faces the lowest-seeded team, then the winners play each other (doubleheader), to leave only one Losers Bracket team after 5/2. That team will face the loser of the Winners Bracket from 5/2, on 5/9. Then the winner of that on 5/9 will play the winner of the Winners Bracket for the championship, also on 5/9. We will repeat based on the double-elim format on 5/16 if necessary.

Going back to non-repeating in the Losers Bracket final four on 5/2, this is because if we repeated a matchup that was already played, then the previous matchup is more irrelevant, which is really a shame in a double-elimination format.

The bottom line is, you have to kind of beat everybody to win this thing. Of course, if you're in the Winners Bracket, you only have to beat the teams that haven't lost yet. I know the above is a quick-and-dirty explanation, but it basically boils down to that. And finally from a league management perspective, you have more happy customers because all six teams are still alive and hopeful for one more week. Here's the bracket...

AAA-SJ playoff seedings

TUE 4/13 (10:15PM) -- Here are the seeds for the playoffs. Top teams from each conference get a first-round bye.

1. AlphaKennyOne (5-1) -- tied h2h (1-1) vs 24M, tied common opp (4-0) vs 24M, 11.6 strength-of-victory
2. Anklebreakers (4-2) -- won Eastern Conference
3. 24 Monstars (5-1) -- tied h2h (1-1) vs AKO, tied common opp (4-0) vs AKO, 11.4 strength-of-victory
4. Go Getters (2-4)
5. SJ Hibachi (1-5) -- won head-to-head vs Bchw
6. Beechwood (1-5) -- lost head-to-head vs SJH

You can see that AlphaKennyOne won the tiebreaker against 24 Monstars by the narrowest of margins. We resorted to the NFL wildcard's "strength-of-victory" tiebreaker, which we interpret to mean point differential in games won, and we cap all blowouts at 20.

All teams get double-elimination status since we only have 6 teams.

In the first round, we have the following matchups...

byes: #1 AlphaKennyOne, #2 Anklebreakers
#6 Beechwood at #3 24 Monstars
#5 SJ Hibachi at #4 Go Getters

AAA-SJ roadmap

MON 4/12 (10:15PM) -- Standings updated thru 4/11 games. Roadmap also updated per 4/11 matchups.

WED 4/7 (9:00AM) -- No games played on 4/4, so standings remain the same.

TUE 3/30 (3:00PM) -- Thanks to Tony for updating the standings.

TUE 3/23 (11:45AM) -- Standings updated thanks to Tony (and Wylie from last week).

WED 3/17 (9:45PM) -- First post of standings and roadmap (scroll down). No major issues. 4/4 is a division-wide bye.

BYES: Byes are only allowable
under special circumstances.

If you have a bye later in the season
that is not a formally requested bye,
due to gym fluctuations and other
unforeseen circumstances, that bye is
not locked down; that week's block
of games can still be shuffled around
as necessary until you formally request
that week to be a bye for your team.

GROUND RULES:
1. Please make sure the number of
red rows (games moved from) equals
the number of green rows (games
moved to).
2. Make sure you have 7 regular
season games listed with your
team name.
3. The last 1 or 2 of 7 regular
season games are usually encoded
as inter-conference or other
special type of matchup.
4. The playoffs are pretty much
nailed down, barring unforeseen
circumstances (i.e., no byes!)
5. Any special late bye requests at
this point will require permission
from other teams to shuffle them
around.
6. Special late bye requests can
*usually* be accommodated if your
team plays a double-header some
other week. But sometimes it
depends on if your opponent is
also stuck with a double-header.

Previous posts pertaining to AAA-SJ

WED 3/10 (6:15PM) -- First of all, we now have 6 teams in the AAA-SJ. Like last season, we will go with a round-robin amongst the 6 teams which will yield the first 5 games. Then the 6th game will be a repeat, based on standings to flesh out the seeds before we hit playoffs. Then, everyone will have double-elim status so as to give all teams a guaranteed minimum of 8 games, which is the equivalent of a 7-game regular season plus possible single-elimination status.

Here's the core dump until I can figure out Easter 4/4, then I'll pretty it up in table format...
