Jizz win REC-OAK Upper Bracket!
MON 5/31 (10:45AM) -- Holy smokes! I accidentally had the Dream Crushers beating Jizz, but it was actually Jizz beating Dream Crushers. Congratulations, Jizz! Sorry about that. At least I didn't post a team pic of DC! Jizz, send me a team photo. Or logo. Or something of you guys. I feel bad!
FRI 5/28 (8:00PM) -- The Dream Crushers defeated Jizz to finish 13-1 for the season and capture the REC-OAK Upper bracket. Here's the final bracket. If there's a team photo out there, be sure to email it to me...

Rising Stars win REC-OAK Lower Bracket!
FRI 5/28 (8:30PM) -- The Rising Stars survived the single-elim Lower Bracket to win the Championship there...

Playoff Brackets updated
WED 5/19 (1:15AM) -- In the Upper Bracket, we have a one-and-done Repeat Championship for this Sun 5/23...

In the Lower Bracket, the single-elimination playoffs comes to an end with the last two remaining teams for this Sun 5/23...

WED 5/12 (8:00AM) -- Once again, we'll talk Upper Playoffs first. We're now down to our Final Three teams. It'll be Bull/DCR to determine who survives the Losers Bracket, then the winner faces Jizz in the Championship. Should Jizz lose on 5/16, we come back on 5/23 with a Repeat Championship...

In the Lower Playoffs, we have no changes per the post from last week, since we took 5/9 off for Mothers Day. Scroll down to see the previous post. It's single-elimination and we have four teams left on 5/16. Then next Sun 5/23 we'll have the one-and-done Championship.
WED 5/5 (8:00AM) -- First, let's talk about the double-elimination Upper Bracket. A funny thing happened on Dream Crushers' way to the Losers Bracket. Normally, you have the top seed, #1 Dream Crushers, play the lowest-seed in the Losers Bracket, the #8 Redhawks. However, these two teams have already played each other and when this happens, we try to avoid a repeat matchup because if you do repeat it, then in the double-elim format, it makes the first meeting irrelevant.
Keep in mind, it's a mini-final-four setup in the Losers Bracket anyways, so it really doesn't matter who faces whom first.
Anyways, we take the next-lowest seed, #6 Shogun. But in doing so, we have somewhat restructured the Losers Bracket, as you can see...

We should have the Championship game on 5/16, which means a Repeat Championship (not listed yet) would occur on 5/23.
Here are the matchups for 5/9...
Upper-p3-WB: #7 Jizz at #4 Bulls Upper-p3a-LB: #8 Redhawks at #3 Richmond Bomberz Upper-p3a-LB: #6 Shogun at #1 Dream Crushers REC Upper-p3b-LB: Winner-Redh/Rich at Winner-Shog/DCR
In the Lower Single-Elimination Bracket, we can actually take 5/9 Mothers Day off since there's two rounds left and no repeat championship possible due to the single-elim format. So enjoy having 5/9 off and we'll see you on 5/16, as follows...

Playoff brackets for REC-OAK Upper
THU 4/29 (8:00AM) -- Please scroll down for REC-OAK Lower Bracket. Here's the latest and greatest for REC-OAK Upper...

We now have 5 teams in the Losers Bracket. We need to dwindle that down to 2 by the end of 5/2, at which point the 2 losers from the Winners Bracket will form a mini-final-four in the Losers Bracket for 5/9. On 5/9, we dwindle those 4 down to 1, so that surviving team will play the loser of the Winners Bracket final, which then leaves 3 teams for Championship Weekend: the 2 remaining Losers Bracket teams, and the 1 Winners Bracket survivor.
Again, that means for 5/2, we have 5 teams that need to be dwindled down to 2. As part of the fair competition rules, we always "re-seed" the Losers Bracket such that the highest seed plays the lowest seed. After all, they earned that right. And when there's an odd number of teams, we have to set the highest seed to play against the winner of the two lowest seeds.
That leaves us with a repeat matchup: #9 WWWD vs #8 Redhawks. There is no other choice but to match them up again, with the winner to face the highest remaining seed, #2 Bay Hype. We have strived to avoid repeat matchups in the Losers Bracket because that essentially makes irrelevant the first matchup, but in this case there is no alternative.
I think we've also discovered an issue with a 9-team all-double-elimination bracket. You will always find this potential problem in a 9-team all-double-elim bracket. I'm not sure I can remember the last time we had 9 teams in a pure-double-elim bracket. So, we haven't seen this type of thing in a long, long time.
And I think it is, indeed, the fair thing to do. The only other somewhat viable option is that #2 gets a bye while the other four teams get dwindled to one, but I think that creates a way, way too strong advantage to that #2 seed. They're already getting an advantage in the present solution waiting for the winner of #8/#9, which will be on the 2nd game of a doubleheader to boot.
So, we have these matchups in REC-OAK Upper for 5/2...
Upper-p2-WB: #4 Bulls at #1 Dream Crushers REC Upper-p2-WB: #7 Jizz at #6 Shogun Upper-p2a-LB: #9 What Would Wat Do at #8 Redhawks Upper-p2b-LB: Winner-WWWD/Redh at #2 Bay Hype REC Upper-p2-LB: #5 EBAYC at #3 Richmond Bomberz

| Playoff seeds for REC-OAK Upper/Lower
WED 4/28 (11:59PM) -- Now that the Lower division teams are done with the regular season, let's look at how the seeds in the single-elim Lower Bracket for sub-.500 teams shook out...
REC-OAK LOWER BRACKET (ALL SINGLE-ELIMINATION) 1. Out Of Order (3-4) -- won h2h vs SqRC, won s-o-v (5.3) vs Loon, won Southeast Conf 2. Sqad Up REC (3-4) -- lost h2h vs OOO, won s-o-v (9.3) vs Loon, won Southwest Conf 3. Looney Tunes (3-4) -- won common (2-3) vs IDM, lost s-o-v (5.0) vs OOO/SqRC, won NW Conf 4. It Don't Matter (3-4) -- lost common opponents (2-4) vs Loon, won Central Conf 5. Young Gunners (3-4) -- lost head-to-head vs SqRC 6. Warriors (OAK) (2-5) -- won strength-of-victory (6.5) vs Str7 7. Starting 7 (2-5) -- won head-to-head vs Risi, lost strength-of-victory (3.5) vs OakW 8. Rising Stars (2-5) -- won head-to-head vs HvyH, lost head-to-head vs Str7 9. Heavy Hitters (2-5) -- lost head-to-head vs Risi 10. Huff And Puff (1-6) -- won head-to-head vs Prim 11. Primes (1-6) -- lost head-to-head vs Huff
To explain how we figured the tiebreakers, remember that with the NFL system, you start with head-to-head matchup, then common opponents, then what they call "strength-of-victory", which Dream League interprets as "point differential in games won". However, please note, in Dream League we cap blowouts at 20, since we don't think there's anything more profound about a 30-point blowout over a 20-point blowout. It also avoids unsportsmanlike conduct -- we once had a situation in a tournament where a team thought a 30-point blowout would help them more than a 20-point blowout and when their player attempted a three-pointer, the other team flagrant-fouled him.
Also, in the NFL, you compare against the teams within your "group", which would be our "conference", which determines which team dominates over another, then you compare outside of that.
Finally, when we have four conferences, quite simply we give the "winners" of each conference the top four seeds. Note that here in the Lower Bracket, we didn't have "winners" per se, since the real winners are in the Upper Bracket, but you get the point. We take the next highest "winners" of each conference. In the NBA, they have three groups from which to determine the top four seeds, so they can be flexible and still give the 2nd-best team the #2 seed. We don't really have that luxury, with four groups and the top four seeds.
This season, we had morningers in two conferences and afternooners in two other conferences. So, effectively, the morningers never played the afternooners. That would be the Southeast and Southwest, never playing against the Central and Northwest. Thus, whenever we compare tied teams from those opposite conferences, we won't have a head-to-head solution, nor will we have a "common opponents" solution. We end up looking at strength-of-victory.
From top to bottom, we look at all the tied teams at 3-4. First, we look at Sqad and Young Gunners. Looks like Sqad won the head-to-head, therefore the Young Gunners cannot finish higher than Sqad. Then we look at other possible head-to-heads. We find that Out Of Order beat Sqad Up head-to-head, so Sqad cannot finish higher than Out Of Order.
On the other side of the standings, we must compare Looney Tunes and It Don't Matter. They did not play head-to-head, but they certainly played against some of the same teams. It turns out that Looney went 2-3 against common opponents that IDM went 2-4 against. Those teams were Rising, Redhawks, Bay Hype, Heavy, and Shoguns. IDM split two games against Heavy and you can almost count to that as the difference. Sometimes it comes down to that. So anyways, IDM cannot finish higher than Looney.
Since Looney was totally isolated from Sqad, we resort to strength-of-victory and Sqad wins that. We have now determined the top four seeds.
We go through a similar process for the 2-5 teams. First, Rising vs Heavy. Rising won the head-to-head. Heavy can't finish higher than Rising.
Then compare to Starting 7, which won head-to-head vs Rising. Both Rising and Heavy can't finish higher than Starting 7.
Finally a comparison to the isolated Warriors. Of course, we have to resort to strength-of-victory. Warriors win that one, 6.5 to 3.5, which means Warriors are on top of Starting 7 and therefore Rising and Heavy as well.
The last tiebreaker is Primes vs Huff and Huff wins that one in a head-to-head.
Here are the matchups for 5/2...
Lower-p1a: #9 Heavy Hitters at #8 Rising Stars Lower-p1b: Winner-HvyH/Risi at #1 Out Of Order Lower-p1a: #10 Huff And Puff at #7 Starting 7 Lower-p1b: Winner-Huff/Str7 at #2 Sqad Up REC Lower-p1a: #11 Primes at #6 Warriors (OAK) Lower-p1b: Winner-Prim/OakW at #3 Looney Tunes Lower-p1: #5 Young Gunners at #4 It Don't Matter
THU 4/22 (1:30PM) -- The following five teams will have a bye on 4/25...
rec-oak byes: Loon/SqRC/OakW/OOO/YGun.
THU 4/22 (1:15PM) -- Here are the matchups in the Upper Bracket for this Sun 4/25...
Upper-p1a: #9 What Would Wat Do at #8 Redhawks Upper-p1b: Winner-WWWD/Redh at #1 Dream Crushers REC Upper-p1: #7 Jizz at #2 Bay Hype REC Upper-p1: #6 Shogun at #3 Richmond Bomberz Upper-p1: #5 EBAYC at #4 Bulls
Here are the makeup games in the Lower group (bracket to be determined next week), playing on Sun 4/25...
interc2: Huff And Puff at Primes interc2: Starting 7 at Rising Stars interc2: It Don't Matter at Heavy Hitters
I won't be updating the roadmap for awhile, since the games are explicitly listed here.
THU 4/22 (1:00PM) -- Alas, here are the seeds for the Upper double-elimination Bracket for REC-OAK. The Lower sub-.500 teams shall be determined next week, since there are still 6 teams playing their 7th and final regular season games amongst those "cellar dwellers" -- Young Gunners and Warriors will therefore get a bye this Sun 4/25. Here we go with the Upper...
UPPER DOUBLE-ELIMINATION BRACKET (.500+ teams) 1. Dream Crushers REC (7-0) -- won Southeast Conf 2. Bay Hype REC (6-1) -- won Northwest Conf 3. Richmond Bomberz (5-2) -- won Southwest Conf 4. Bulls (4-3) -- won Central Conf, won head-to-head vs Jizz 5. EBAYC (6-1) 6. Shogun (5-2) 7. Jizz (4-3) -- lost h2h vs Bull, won h2h vs Redh, won s-o-v (11.3) vs WWWD 8. Redhawks (4-3) -- lost h2h vs Jizz, won h2h (11.8) vs WWWD 9. What Would Wat Do (4-3) -- lost s-o-v (7.0) vs Jizz/Redh
You'll see that we're giving the top four seeds to the conference winners. Before people kick and scream by this, remember that we had morningers separated from afternooners. Also, it's a double-elim playoff bracket, so it really doesn't matter. Survival of the fittest, everyone gets double-elim.
That means EBAYC dropped to #5 and Shogun to #6. With the Bulls beating Jizz head-to-head, the Bulls got the #4 seed.
Finally, the Jizz beat the Redhawks head-to-head, so the Redhawks couldn't finish higher than Jizz. Because WWWD never played against the Jizz or Redhawks or any of their opponents, we had to resort to the NFL "strength-of-victory" tiebreaker, which Dream League interprets as point differential in games won.
WWWD lost to Jizz on strength-of-victory, then they lost to the Redhawks as well on that front, and that's why WWWD gets the #9 seed.
Incidentally, I noticed that WWWD's wins all came against teams that will be in the Lower Bracket. I thought about it for a minute: Would they rather be placed in the Lower Bracket? I think the answer is no. First of all: double-elim status. You kinda always want that, unless the comp is just way, way above your head, as compared to single-elim. Secondly, the Lower Bracket will have 11 teams. Holy smokes! Eleven teams in a single-elim bracket! Talk about April/May madness. I don't think WWWD wants that.
So, WWWD is better off being a low seed in a double-elim bracket in this case.
THU 4/22 (12:30PM) -- I just sent the following message to all captains in REC-OAK...
Dear REC-OAK captains,
I just realized I made a huge mistake. So last Sun 4/18, I postponed some of the "cellar dwellers" in REC-OAK due to the gym shortage. However, I mistakenly thought that would be a bye for the remaining REC-OAK teams this Sun 4/25.
In fact, there is room for teams to start playing, esp. the "Upper" teams.
Sorry about that. I will now fix the Special Request and REC-OAK Roadmap pages.
So, you should expect to play this Sun unless you are a cellar dweller that played on 4/18. I think the only teams not playing this Sun 4/25 are, therefore, Young Gunners and Warriors (OAK).
Thanks, Rich WED 4/21 (3:00PM) -- Standings updated thru 4/18 games. Makeup games left on 4/25. See roadmap below.
THU 4/15 (1:00PM) -- Some cellar-dwellar REC-OAK games have been postponed to 4/25. Upper double-elim playoffs will still start on 4/25. Lower single-elimination playoffs will be delayed until 5/2, but is only 4 rounds max anyways.
TUE 4/13 (8:15PM) -- Standings updated thru 4/11 games. Roadmap updated thru last week's changes.
WED 4/7 (9:45AM) -- Standings thru 4/4 games updated.
TUE 3/30 (3:30PM) -- Standings updated, thanks to Tony.
TUE 3/23 (2:15PM) -- Standings are updated, but I already know it's not correct because the total wins don't equal total losses, so my keystone cops screwed up. Plus I think they missed one game. Got em working on it again. Hope they finish soon. Not happy about it because this is the 3rd or 4th division that's not 100% accurate.
FRI 3/19 (8:30AM) -- See roadmap change in update list, RH side of table below. Per Jizz special request for 3/21.
FRI 3/19 (12:15AM) -- New standings and roadmap, scroll down. Note: previous posts may be irrelevant now. Makeup weekend 4/4.

BYES: Byes are only allowable under special circumstances. If you have a bye later in the season that is not a formally requested bye, due to gym fluctuations and other unforeseen circumstances, that bye is not locked down; that week's block of games can still be shuffled around as necessary until you formally request that week to be a bye for your team.
GROUND RULES: 1. Please make sure the number of red rows (games moved from) equals the number of green rows (games moved to). 2. Make sure you have 7 regular season games listed with your team name. 3. The last 1 or 2 of 7 regular season games are usually encoded as inter-conference or other special type of matchup. 4. The playoffs are pretty much nailed down, barring unforeseen circumstances (i.e., no byes!) 5. Any special late bye requests at this point will require permission from other teams to shuffle them around. 6. Special late bye requests can *usually* be accommodated if your team plays a double-header some other week. But sometimes it depends on if your opponent is also stuck with a double-header.

Previous posts pertaining to REC-OAK roadmap
THU 3/11 (7:15AM) -- There are 20 teams in the REC-OAK and I have divided them into morningers (10) and afternooners (10)...
SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE (morning) Out Of Order Warriors (OAK) Dream Crushers REC Primes EBAYC
SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE (morning) Sqad Up REC Huff And Puff Richmond Bomberz What Would Wat Do Young Gunners
CENTRAL CONFERENCE (afternoon) Bulls Heavy Hitters Jizz Rising Stars Looney Tunes
NORTHWEST CONFERENCE (afternoon) Bay Hype REC It Don't Matter Starting 7 Shogun Redhawks
...which means if you suddenly have a week in which you're a morning team and you can only play late at night, for example, you're probably out of luck.
At the end of the season, we will take the top teams with at least a .500 record and put them all in a double-elimination format playoff. The winners of each conference will get the top four seeds, just to add a little spice to it all. We will have a separate single-elimination bracket for all the teams that finished below .500.
Here's the core dump until I can figure out Easter 4/4, then I'll pretty it up in table format...
