Gun violence overlaps into our basketball community (again)

I'm almost too depressed to type this. I think I'll just do a little stream of consciouness -- I can't really think about organizing paragraphs and coming up with a good way to express this. When someone you know dies and you know you will never see that person again, let alone say hello to him/her, that's a bitter pill to swallow. When that someone dies by gun violence, simply put it just feels worse. And I can hardly imagine how it feels when that someone is someone close to you, as in, an immediate family member.

Jason DelaCruz was shot and killed at around 2am outside a pizza and bar area of San Francisco. Jason is the brother of former Vegas tourney MVP Jeremy DelaCruz. Jeremy's been my teammate before in dreamleague and a long-time member of renowned Filipino tourney team the Bay Area Wizards, as well as the Bay Area Heads. Dozens more here in the Bay's Asian American basketball community probably know Jeremy and Jason better than I do. I never really met Jason, but I did see him make a couple cameo appearances on the court with his brother's strong NL-caliber teams. The thing I most remember about him: he's the spittin' image of Jeremy...

On behalf of my team JUMPMEN, our prayers and hearts go out to the entire DelaCruz family! We all knew Jason DelaCruz aka "JD" within the basketball circuit. I first meet him maybe 3 or 4 years ago playing open gym basketball @ Lowell High. From then on we pretty much became the regular team that would come out there every Thursday nite to get a good sweat. Competition was always good because Jeremy and his team would always be playing their and it was all pretty much the "Wizards" territory. After years of playing open gym their it started to slowly die down but JD would always keep us in mind because he knew that we were just always down to run. Just looking back at all the good times that we had at open gym will only be our memory of JD. My last memory of him was speaking to him over the phone last Thursday 3/27 asking if I was coming to open gym but I told him no because I really wanted to watch that Warrior game. So I told JD that I would see him next week. It's just sad news to find out the next week I'll be seeing JD is in a casket over gun violence. On a good note, JD will never be forgotten by the JUMPMEN family. He was a big brother towards us and always showed us love no matter what.
You will forever be in our hearts, RG

My prayers go out to Jeremy & his family. I met JD 9 years ago through my good friend Mike who is like a brother to JD & Jeremy. JD always showed respect & love to everyone he met. I used to hoop with JD every Thursday at Lowell. It was always a pretty tight knit group that came out. He always wanted us to either hoop or even just to kick at the gym. I'm gonna miss those good times we had with JD. JD I will never forget you brotha ! J keep ya head up. 1 luv Joe K
