Matt Lee's 15 seconds of fame
![]() |
One of the three non-Pacific-Islander Asian guys currently playing in college D-1 basketball, Matt Lee, hit a buzzer-beating (albiet non-consequential) trey on regional TV coverage over the holidays. This for the fabled UCLA Bruins, the #7-ranked team at the time!
You can catch the video clip by clicking on the picture above or at BruinsNation.com.
For us dreamleaguers in the Bay Area who have seen Lee, brother of stalwart power forward Jon G. Lee, make cameo appearances during the summer in league and tournament play, the shot comes as no surprise.
Okay, maybe it was really just 5 seconds of fame, not 15.
Speaking of Asians in D-1, I just found out that Japeth Aguilar became the first player recruited out of the Philippines to receive a D-1 scholarship. He's currently at Western Kentucky and has been injured of late.
There's also KJ Matsui of Columbia and Jeremy Lin of Harvard, whom we interviewed last year.
And there's also two other Fil-Ams playing college ball in California, although I don't remember their names off-hand (at St. Mary's?). If you know of any others, please leave your info in the comments.

Matt and Jon Lee are cousins of mine. I'm glad Matt finally got in the playing time he deserves. As long as he keeps working hard, better things should keep coming his way. Good job, Matt! I'll still beat you at the next party hahaha
Thanks for droppin' the knowledge on Japeth Aguilar.
Check out this blurb from WKU's newspaper:
Junior transfer Japeth Aguilar (206-F/C) took the title in the slam dunk contest, bettering fellow newcomers Desire Gabou and Jeremy Evans, and junior Mike Walker. Aguilar’s second dunk of the night was a one-handed slam in which he was put his entire forearm through the rim. He secured the championship in the finals with a baseline two-handed windmill.
Need video evidence?

Dude has sick hops!
Cal has 2 chinese dudes on the team. One is a scholarship freshman who is redshirting named Max Zhang who's 7'3". Other is a walk on sophmore named Thomas Fang. Fang hit a 3ptr against arizona last year. check out www.calbears.com
Jeremy Lin's been starting and playing a lot for Harvard. They've made him for of a scoring guard rather than a point guard.
He apparently had 20 points in a 80-77 loss to UC Irvine last week and a SLAM DUNK. Do a search in Google. I wish there were pics or video to see who kind of dunk was thrown down.
Talk about a brain fart. I wrote about Cal's two Asian players not too long ago. Apologies to Thomas, whom I've met in person. Thank you Ilyn for the reminder.
There are also recent guys who just graduated who made an impact in their programs, 1) with Gabe Norwod from George Mason who was the 6th Man and played for the Final Four team (1/4 filipino), another is Json Haas who was the backup point guard behind Chris Hernandez who had that amazing 29-1 season years ago and LJ Aguillo who walked on for Penn State coming from an injured knee in high school that caused him to lose interest from schools. Interesting thing is that these 3 guys all came from the same high school/area.
